[Resolved] have a fail message upon start up...

Upon start up a little window appears that just says fail. When I run task manager it doesn't show any programs running at that time. Another thing I've noticed that when I tried to run a speedtest.net it showed the speed to be significantly slower than when I first tested it in oct I believe. I wondering if there is any malware or spyware running that I'm not noticing. I run mcafee constantly and use spybot every couple of weeks or so. Both came up negative on scans. So far I've backed up the registry and have a log I'm hoping some one can look at to see if you can help. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello tocann

You have some unwanted spyware, adware and foistware on your system which we can get rid of.

You have Viewpoint Installed - this is considered Foistware as most people are not aware it has been installed on their system. it is not necessarily a 'bad' program, however i recommend you remove it, along with the otheradware programs installed on your system.

To do this please go to

Start> Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs
A list of installed programs will populate

locate the following programs (if there) and click REMOVE

Viewpoint
Relevant Knowledge
Wild Tangent

Exit Add/Remove Programs

Next

Go to Start> Search > All files and folders

Once in the All files and folders section choose > More Advanced Options
check the top three boxes
Then, one by one search for the below noted folders/files - if located DELETE

C:\Program Files\WildTangent
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Relevant Knowledge

Exit search

NEXT

open HJT
click do a system scan only
Put a checkmark in the box on the left side on ONLY these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {971F630E-AD68-4d6e-B0C3-1C627AAC80F1} - (no file)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Next

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
Post that log back here.

NEXT

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

Disable any script blocking protection
Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
Save both reports to your desktop.

Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

Things are looking a lot better but there is still a little more work to do.

It looks like you have some residue of Symantec/Norton left on your system.

It is best to uninstall all the leftovers.
Symantec has a tool that will remove all of its products from failed uninstalls
Download the Norton Remover tool for your product and follow the instructions for removal.

Next I would like you to perform an online virus scan, but before you do that it would be best to remove all of your outdated versions of Java from your system.
This will allow the virus scan to work better)

The new versions of Java now overwrite the old so this will only have to be done this time….there is a new version of Java just released version 6 update 12.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer. (V6update12)

Once that is taken care of

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
- Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
- It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
- When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
- Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
ArchivesMail databases
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Starting to look good, there are a couple more things I would like you to do:

Please do the following:

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the run box and press OK:

reg export "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt" "%userprofile%\desktop\menu.txt"

A new file called menu.txt should appear on your Desktop, please post the contents with your next response.

NEXT

Download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
Copy the lines in the codebox below.

Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
If you are not asked to reboot close OTMoveIt3.
A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).

Good news - your log looks clean

We just have a little clean up to do now….as for the 'fail' notice, lets clean everything up first then see where it stands.

Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
Copy the lines inside the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If an item cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Once that is done, we need to do some more clean up:

Clean up with OTMoveIt3:

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
On the OTMoveIt3 main screen, press the CleanUp! button
Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following command into into the runbox

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something like All Clean) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next go to Start Menu > Run > copy/paste the following command into the runbox

Cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once that's finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.
Make Internet Explorer more secure
- Click Start > Run
- Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
- Click on the Security tab
- Click Reset all zones to default level
- Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
- In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
- Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
For use with Firefox I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
- NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
- McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling
Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Here is the log from move it after rebooting, it would not let me copy from the results box. The computer is working fine and all seems well, until I go to shut down. the fail box will flash on for just a second before the machine shuts down. It doesn't give me any time to press the ok in the box. other than that all is well and the computer is responding faster now. thank you very much for your time…
