Hello, I am new here. I have always used spywareinfo but cannot seem to log in or register again… so here I am.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 5100 running XP. It has become really slow, it is especially slow to startup. I suspect McAfee but I do not know what parts of it to disable, then again McAfee may not be the problem.

Here is my logfile, and thank you!

Julien

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LD…

Thank you for the help. I did all you said and ran the malware program. It didn't find anything. My computer seems to be working fine once it gets going. The main problem is that it takes a really long time to start up and get online, much longer than when I replaced the hard drive last year. McAfee seems to do a good job keeping the bugs away but I am thinking that it also slows things down. I sometimes use this machine as a DAW and I try to disable McAfee at those times but it is hard to disable. If i try to disable it in services it restarts itself… and there is no buttons I can find to exit the program.

Then again, it may not be what is causing slow startups. I have checked and defrag tells me that I do not need to defrag, but i did anyway just to see and it made no difference. Maybe I just need to get a newer, faster laptop.

Here is the new HJT logfile and thanks again for looking.

Julien

Thanks for your time and help! My laptop is still running ok but starting really slow. I have two sticks of RAM in it, one 512 and one 256. I have ordered another 512, maybe the mismatch is slowing it. Also, and I don't know if this matters, I have the drive partitioned with the smaller part for the OS and programs. Also, if I just leave the laptop on all the time it will obviously solve the slow startup problem but would that be bad for the laptop because of constant heat. I understand that some people say a computer will last forever if it is never turned off. Currently I do leave my desktop on all the time and I leave the HDs running all the time… do you have an opinion about this? Should I be letting the HDs sleep or would that defeat the purpose of leaving the computer running?
