Hello, and thanks in advance for your help.

My computer downloaded a virus after I visited a weblink last night. Since then I have been taking steps to remove it but to no avail. I have run both Windows Defender and an anti-adware program and have stopped some problems, such as images being blocked as well as not being able to access my Internet Options menu, but certain problems have persisted such as not being given "admin" privileges and not being able to download any new programs offline. My computer will throw up pop-ups from an ad website called c5.zedo.com and another called squadralnode.com, even when I amnot surfing the internet. Both antivirus programs I ran keep telling me that they have found the infection and cleaned it. While "Vundo" was assumedly safely removed from my computer … or so I have ben told … another program is sending me pop-ups every minute or so.

I have run a full Hijack This scan. My log was as follows:

Hello and welcome to Posted Image

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HJT log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.
Hi drixisnoobs,

I notice you have no AntiVirus on your system, this has left your computer open to serious infection.
Before we try an clean you up, please download ONE of the following FREE antivirus programs.
An Anti-Virus product is a necessity.

Avira AntiVir.
Avast,
AVG Free

set the one you choose to receive automatic updates so you are always as fully protected as possible from the newest virus threats.
If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
NOTE: DO NOT install more than one anti-virus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.

  • If you choose AVAST allow it to run a bootscan after install .It will produce a log at this location:
  • C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\AswBoot.txt
  • Include this log in your next reply

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\).
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here.

NEXT

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, (Antivirus, Windows Defender) usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

In your next reply I will need:

  • SDFIX log
  • ComboFix
  • fresh HJT log
  • AV log if you have one
:notworthy:

Well I did everything you said and recommended, including downloading AVG and the Windows Recovery Console.

So far, no pop-ups; I was getting them about one or two every thirty seconds arnd now there are none. My images are now showing up without me having to enable the option in the "Advanced" tab in IE, which is very reassuring.

Here are my logs:

If there is anything else I need to do, please let me know – my computer seems to be running fine now! :D
Hi Drixisnoobs,

Just a lille more work left to do.

There are a couple of unidentified files remaining on your machine. I would like you to submit these files for analysis.
To do this:

Submit the files to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.

c:\program files\Common Files\tebeniji._dl

Then hit Submit
  • The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then repeat the process for this next file:

c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\edolu.bin

Then copy the results and post them here in this thread.
Please be sure to identify which results are for which file.

Note: You may receive a message stating :
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a further piece of malware prohibiting you from uploading this file"
Just let me know if that occurs.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
  • Please provide me with the results of the analysis in your next reply.
NEXT:

* Open HiJackThis
* Click on Do a system scan only
* Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:
Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy
all the text inside of the code box, put your mouse cursor at the very beginning of the text and then hold down the left button and drag your mouse so that all of the text is highlighted. Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\247416f9.sys

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Autumn\Application Data\cogad

Rootkit::
c:\windows\TEMP\TMP000000320FB81C89C0F28241

Driver::
247416f9

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad. To do this click in the blank page so that your cursor is flashing there and press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')
  • Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"
Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

* Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
* ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Anything else? :)
Hi Drixisnoobs - yes, there is still a little more work to do - please stay with me till I give you the ALL CLEAN post - Thank-you.

First:

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint/Viewpoint Manager is considered to be foistware rather than malware, since it is installed without your approval but doesn't actually spy or do anything "bad". This will soon change, according to this article, which you may want to read:
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products.
If you do decide to get rid of it, please remove all references to Viewpoint from Add/Remove Programs.

Go to Start>ControlPanel>Add or Remove Programs
A list of Installed Programs will populate
Locate anything to do with VIEWPOINT and choose REMOVE

Finally, navigate to and delete the following folders from your your program files (if they still exist)

C:\Program Files\ViewManager <– and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint <– and delete this folder

Then

* Open HiJackThis
* Click on Do a system scan only
* Check the boxes next to ONLY the entry listed below (if present):

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

* Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
* Click Yes when prompted
* Close HijackThis.

NEXT

There still seems to be traces of a potential rootkit on your system.

  • I want to make sure this has been totally eradicated
  • Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows).

  • Post that in your next reply.
When I deleted Viewpoint, it was completely removed from my computer and there were no remaining files left in my Program Files folder.

When I ran HijackThis I did not find the O23 Viewpoint file you specified.

My log from Rooter.exe:

I check back on this post at least twice a day if not more, so no worries - I won't leave til I get the all clear. :)
Hi drixisnoobs

Good news - your system looks clean :thumbup:

Now we have to clean up after ourselves:

FIRST

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

[external image: Posted Image]

NEXT

We need to clean up the rest of the tools we used.

Download ToolsCleaner2 to your desktop and run it (by A.Rothstein & Dj Quiou)
  • Click the Pt. Restauration button and press OK to the prompts.
  • Click the Corbeille button and press OK to the prompt.
  • Click the Fichiers temp button and press OK to the prompt.
  • Click the Recherche button and let it run ( it may look like it freezes but let it continue )
  • Once it is done click the Suppression button and let it remove anything it finds.
  • Close the program

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something like All Clean) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next go to Start Menu > Run > type

Cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once that's finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections.

These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

: Windows Updates :

It is important to have all the latest updates for your Operating System.
Many forms of malware, especially viruses and worms, operate by exploiting previously unnoticed flaws in programs.

Visit Microsoft http://www.windowsupdate.com and download all the latest critical updates available.
Then set your machine to receive automatic updates.
It is an important part of your overall security.
  • Open the Start menu.
  • Click on All Programs>Windows Update.
  • Click on Change settings.
  • Select Install updates automatically (recommended).
  • Under Recommended updates, check the Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates check box.
  • Under Update service, check the Use Microsoft Update check box.
: Firewall :

I also recommend using a third party firewall to protect your computer from hackers.
We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows.
It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry.
As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions.

Three excellent free firewalls are:

Comodo
Sunbelt Kerio
Sygate
NOTE: DO NOT install more than one firewall.

Note: If you choose Comodo - Please be careful with the installation of the Comodo program, it comes bundled with an adware toolbar which you need to de-select when you are going through the installation process. It's not a malicious program, but it may be a privacy risk and I don't think you want it on your system.

: Additional Protection Software :

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs in addition to your current AVG and Windows Defender.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

IE/Spyad
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.

WinPatrol
This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html to help you get started with the program.

Make sure you update all these programs regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

: Consider using a HOSTS file :

A Hosts file will prevent your computer from any known malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. You may download the MVPS Hosts File by clicking >> HERE <<.
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/updates.htm
to the mailing list to get update notifications.

: Make your Internet Explorer more secure :

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

:Take care when downloading programs:

:Take care when downloading programs:
  • Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
  • Don't click on links inside popups.
