STEP 1:

I have suspected for some time that I might have a virus or some sort of malware on my computer. For some time, I would regularly get pop-ups showing random adds, with a URL at the top "c5.zedo.com ….." Its not uncommon to get pop-ups occassional, so I wasn't too worried, but it seemed strange that I would get the same pop-up when clicking onto many different types of websites.

Then, I got worried yesterday when my computer prompted me that the same website "c5.zedo.com" was trying to download something onto my computer. Obviously, I declined the request to download, but I kept getting prompted (probably a total of about 5-7 times. So, I googled "c5.zedo.com" and it appears others have had the same thing and it might be some sort of virus or malware. So, here I am.

STEP 2:

I downloaded and ran all three of the suggeted programs, but the instructions specifically say only to download and cut/past one of them, so I will choose OTL as the one to cut/paste. Here are the two logs:

Hi bowneline,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Is this a private computer?

From your log, I'd guess this computer belongs to an attorney working in Orange County California. Before we continue, please verify that this is your private computer… and keep in mind that tools we run may have "unusual" results on machines running specialty software.

I'll await your response.
TomK: Thank you for responding! You would be correct in that I am an attorney from Orange County. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "private computer," but this is my work computer if that is what you are asking. Does that affect what happens here? :) THANKS!
Using it for work isn't a problem. Is it your personal computer or does it belong to the firm?

There are a couple issues here. Per the sites Terms of Use, we don't work on corporate computers. Another issue that could arise is that if we proceed and you are on a corporate network, It is possible that we could inadvertently change network settings that could cause you problems down the road. And finally, I don't foresee a problem, but you've got some specialized search engines on there that I don't know how our tools will interact with.

Bottom line is, if you have an IT department…. they should be fixing the computer. If it's just your personal computer that you do work on, we can proceed, but it's important that you understand the risks…. however slight they may be.
Again, thanks for responding. I don't own this computer and am hooked up to a work network, so it's probably best that I not take any risks. Our IT guy is impossible to get a hold of and is not terribly helpful, so I came here for help. But, if there are risks for larger problems, then I should play it safe and I will try and get his help.
I can understand the problems with the IT guy… everyone gets busy… but I believe that as an attorney you can understand the risks you would be taking on yourself "tweaking" a system that you don't have the authority to modify. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good Luck.
