I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 and I'm having trouble with adware, spyware, and viruses. My computer has been infected by "Downloader.MisleadApp," "ErrorSafe," "TrojanHorse," "Trojan.Popper," and "WinFixer." This is causing Internet Explorer to open itself and pop ads up on my screen. I've updated and run Symantec AntiVirus, Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007, and Windows Defender in both standard and safe mode. These scans have helped me to clean, quarantine, and delete some things, but I am still having pop-ups coming up because of some that have not been able to be removed. I'm looking for help to resolve this issue and remove these things from my computer. I would really appreciate it if any one could help me. Also, here is my HijackThis logfile.

Hello JJj0k3r and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren
Thanks for replying. I just downloaded and ran ComboFix, then I ran HijackThis again. I have a question for you though. Before running ComboFix I didn't have an Internet Explorer icon on my desktop, but after running ComboFix, an Internet Explorer icon appeared. Is that supposed to happen, and would it be safe to delete the icon? Here are the ComboFix and HijackThis log files.

A. When you posted your CombiFix.txt, had you saved it into a file beforehand then copy/pasted it to the forum? The reason I ask is that although it looks perfect when posted on the board, when I look at that report through a certain tool that I use, it does not produce the anticipated result.

B. Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  • Run HijackThis.
  • Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  • Save list to Desktop
  • Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.

Trevuren
I didn't think about it so I didn't save the ComboFix log file. I just copied and pasted the results. Should I run it again and save the file before posting it again? Here is the list you asked for. A. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2…allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\iun6002ev.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popcinfo.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\265FCE2634.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yv12vfw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Ctregrun.exe

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Start Page"="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157"

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

C. Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
[external image: Posted Image]
[external image: Posted Image]
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log

D. Please tell me how your system is now running.

Regards,

Trevuren
Here are the ComboFix and HijackThis logs. I also wanted to tell you that every time I start up Windows and log in, my Symantec AntiVirus tells me that my computer has encountered more infections, and it has either deleted or quarantined it. I wanted to ask you if what we are doing will take care of the problems I have been having, as well as these re-occuring infections.

Here are the Kaspersky Scan and HijackThis logs. For the Kaspersky Scan, it said it only works for Internet Explorer 6 or higher, and I didn't know which version I have, but it worked for me, so I guess I had what it needed, but I just wanted to mention it to you to see if it would matter. How could I check to see which version of Internet Explorer I have? And if I don't have Internet Explorer 6 or higher, should I get a newer version and redo the Kaspersky scan?
If I need to do this, could you provide me with a link to get the newer version of Internet Explorer? The infections that Symantec Antivirus is picking up every time I start up Windows and log in are "Downloader.MisleadApp," "ErrorSafe," "TrojanHorse," "Trojan.Popper," "WinFixer," "Downloader," and "SecurityRiskOn." "Downloader" and "SecurityRiskOn" are two new ones that have recently been picked up, but the other five have been picked up since the problem began. The antivirus picks up about two or three infections by a combination of any two of these things each time I start up Windows and log in. The locations of these things vary. Some have been quarantined or deleted, while others remain in their original locations. I will give you the current locations of some things that haven't been deleted or quarantined. Some infections by "trojanHorse" and "ErrorSafe" are located in C:\Documents and Settings\J\Local Settings\Temp\
Some infections by "ErrorSafe," Trojan Horse," Downloader.MisleadApp," and "WinFixer" are located in C:\Documents and Settings\J\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IJOLA5U7\
Also, there is an infection by "Downloader" in C:\WINDOWS\system32\f10WtR\
I hope this will help you figure out my problem and solve it.

  • Only click the Save button in the Scan Details header!! (Otherwise you must purchase the program to remove entries, and we will do that here.)
  • Save the TotalScan.txt to the Desktop
Please post the TotalScan.txt in your reply along with a fresh HJT log
I use Firefox, but I just wanted to know what version of Internet Explorer I have because the Kaspersky Scan was using Internet Explorer and I just wanted to make sure my version was new enough. I'm using version 6 according to the directions you gave me to find out. I don't know if I have all the patches though, but if you could link me to them I would download them. Here are the TotalScan and HijackThis logs.

So now you have 3 different scanners saying that nothing is there.

For Window updates, open Internet Explorer, Choose Tools and click on updates. Then follow the prompts.

Congratulations, your log looks CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Time for some housekeeping

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
  • Click the Cleanup button.
  • The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
I have a question for you. You said that the three scanners say that nothing is there, but I remember that they did say that my computer had some infections, viruses, suspicious objects, etc. Were these things not threats, or have they been resolved in some way? Otherwise, my computer seems to be working well, and no pop-ups yet. I've ran OTMoveIt and ATF Cleaner as well as set a new system restore point. I also wanted to ask you about the programs you recommended. I already have Spybot - Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007, and have decided not to download IE-Spyad or Google Toolbar. I've decided that I want to download and use SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and MVPS Hosts File. I have Windows XP Service Pack 2, Symantec AntiVirus, Spybot - Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007, and Windows Defender. Will I be able to use these three programs without any conflict? Also, the link to SpywareGuard does not work, could you please link me to the download again? And from your link to MVPS Hosts File, I am unsure how to download it. Could you please link me to that download again as well?
A. The site to the Hosts File is pretty self-explanatory. You download the file here: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

Then you open the zip file and extract its content into the following folder:

Foe XP: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\……

B. There will be no conflict between any of these programs

C.
SpywareGuard can now be downloaded from here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

C.

I have a question for you. You said that the three scanners say that nothing is there, but I remember that they did say that my computer had some infections, viruses, suspicious objects, etc. Were these things not threats, or have they been resolved in some way?

If they were dangerous items, I would not have left them on your machine. If you followed all of my instructions, all dangerous files are no longer present. You may have an odd qharantine from an old program hanging around but if you find one, delete it.
