Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with my Internet Explorer. When I open the web browser it does take me to my home page however from there it will not load in any website I type in. It will take me someplace completely different. Even if I click on a website from a search engine it will take me somewhere else. I am not able to go to the Windows update site. The error I get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page. I actually get this error most commonly when I manually type in a web address. I'm also not able to use the check disk or defrag utilities. The error I get is "Windows is unable to complete the disk check" and "Disk Defragmenter could not start". I've been reading online about people with this similar problem and found it to be related to a virus. I have run a complete virus and spyware scan with AVG 8.0 (current updates) and it only found a few cookies and no threats. I downloaded Hijackthis V2 and a copy of the report is below. If someone could please look at this and tell me if anything looks suspicious. If there is anything else I can do please let me know. Thank you very much!!

Welcome jbates470

Apologies for the late reply. As you can appreciate the boards are quite busy. If you still require help with your computer problem could you do the following:

DDS
Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links & save it to your desktop.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after a log will appear
  • Click Yes at the next prompt, another log named attach.txt will appear
  • A window will open instructing you to post both logs. Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
Gmer
Download gmer.zip from Gmer here & save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All…
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK
  • Click Next. It will start extracting
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it
  • Select the Rootkit tab
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned
  • Click on the Scan button
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply
  • Close Gmer
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

jmw3, Thank you for replying. While I was waiting for a reply I downloaded Malwarebytes and did a complete system scan. This found several things that nothing else did. I had the software remove all of the items and my computer works perfectly now. I have full access to disk check and the deframenter. I can also access the Windows update site now as well. My internet explorer works fine now too! I have done several other scans and they have all come back clean so I think I'm all set. Thank you very much for your time and if I have any further difficulty I will let you know. Thanks again! Sincerely, jbates470
