Hi I am having problems getting on to the internet using Explorer and now Netscape. Shows page can't be displayed or loaded. I continue to refresh page and eventually it will load up. This problem continues when I follow a link and even happens when Norton tries to do an on line update. It was recommended I try HijackThis. I've done this and nothing stands out in the log ( but then I build roads for a living not fix computers). Hope someone can give me a few ideas. Hello steveolsson,

I have looked over your log and it looks fairly clean of any viruses or malware, or anything that will cause the problems you are having.

Lets try a few things and if they don't work I can direct you to some windows tech support sites that deal with this sort of problem.

Lets start out by cleaning out all your temp files and temporary internet files…instructions here.

You should boot into safemode for this to work correctly,

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

This process will clean out your TEMP FILES and your TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. Please do both steps:

Step 1 - DELETE TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

* click on START/ RUN and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. You should do this for each user on your system. Please delete all
files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others.

* Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

Step 2 - DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Now I want you to open up INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now open Internet Explorer go to TOOLS> INTERNET OPTIONS> PROGRAMS> and click on RESET WEB SETTINGS. Then Apply/ OK.

Sometimes a virus can hide, so lets double check and run both these free online virus scanners, have them set to AUTO-CLEAN or to FIX ALL.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

I would like you also to download, install via the link in my signature and run both these fine free spyware scanners. I would recommend installing them anyway eventually and running them every so often.

* Install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / IGNORE PRODUCTS and put a checkmark in DSO EXPLOITS.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out ofUSAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S & D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.05

If you have an older version of AD-AWARE You can remove it via
the ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS IN THE CONTROL PANEL

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT and let it remove all that if finds.

Post back and let me know how your doing and post a new HJT log.

Ken :D
Hi Ken545

Thanks for all the info.
I followed all instructions and every was going fine until I came to the online virus scanners, couldn't get either of them to start to work. Tried several times, maybe something to do with the my connection problem?
So I carried on with the instructions with the other two programs, no problems there.
Spybot picked up six or so problems but Lavaware didn't get any.
Heres the new log

Good Morning Steve,

You may have your security set to high in Internet Explorer. You need to enable Active X to run. Do this…

Open up Internet Explorer
Then to TOOLS> Internet Options> Security
Then click on the Custom Level Icon
Set it to LOW Apply/ OK

Don't forget to reset this back to where you had it before, most likely at Medium High or High

Your log shows that both Housecall and Panda have been downloaded. Sometimes it takes awhile for them to get going, the site could be real busy.

Try running them again, I also included 2 other ones if you still can't get housecall and panda to work.

If you get one or two of them to work, please post back with anything they found and couldn't fix, along with a new HJT log. In the meantime, I will look over your current log.
Hello Ken Sorry I've been so long answering you but I'm having a lot of trouble staying connected. I tried to run all of the online spyware programs you suggested but none of them will work. One of them just shuts down Internet Explorer. another one only loads up to 14% then stops, and the others just won't load. I've taken the security off as you suggested but it doesn't seem to help. Have you any other suggestions? Steve
Steve, Sorry your still having problems, post a new HJT log, your system may have changed and If I don't find anything wrong I will direct you to a few free windows tech support sites, this may be a software or hardware problem and not related to any viruses or such. So post a new log please. Ken
Hello Ken

Here's the latest log.
Happy hunting

Thanks
Steve :wavey:

steveolsson,

Your log looks ok, you have a few things loading at Startup that are not needed unless you want to keep them. If you don't you can safely remove them with HJT.

Here are some tips and free tools that will keep you protected in the future.

Download and install CCleaner, it will do an excellent job of cleaning all the not needed garbage on your system.
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
clean out your TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

Now, while in SAFEMODE,

* click on START/ RUN , and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses. GO TO EDIT/ SELECT ALL and delete all the contents of that folder.
* Do this for each user of your computer.
* Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now we need to TURN OFF and then TURN BACK ON SYSTEM RESTORE.

This will remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent
any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points
which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Now create a new restore point

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.
* If you want to use a free program, try this one –> http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

* Run SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY/ CHECK FOR UPDATES/ IMMUNIZE and run a full system scan on a regular basis.

* Run AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL/ CHECK FOR UPDATES and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN on a regular basis.

* Follow the links at the bottom of my post and download and run SPYWARE BLASTER, check for updates and enalble all protection.

* Also install SPYWARE GUARD.
These two programs won't scan your system, but will sit in the background blocking most of the garbage from installing in the first place.
* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/ GO TO PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.
