I am trying to clean up my daughter's laptop.
Symptons: freezes up when on the web, hangs on shutdown (upto 20 min.), lagging keystrokes
Whats been done: Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - identified, fixed and quarintined 57 trojans 📎mbam_log_2009_01_07b__23_40_06_.txt
I was on the Windows section on this forum and was advised to submit my HJ log here before going any further in trying to resolve my issues. I'm currently in safe mode which works without issues.
Any help is appreciated……thanks, Rick

I got impatient waiting for a reply and did a factory settings restore which seems to have helped. Not sure if it was the right thing to do but had to do something.
Hello rasit

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to. If you have not resolved your issue and still need assistance, post a new HJT log please as your system may have changed since your original post.

Ken
In spite of resetting the laptop back to factory settings (Ctrl+F11) I'm still having issues. Sure would appreciated it if you could review my log and advise me on how to proceed. thanks……..Rick

Web pages randomly hang/freeze when loading. If I go to task manager the application tab will show two identical processes for the web page in question, both not responing. When I right click the first one and click "Go to process" the processs is "explorer.exe". When I right click the second one the process is listed as "IEXPLORER.EXE". If I highlight one or the other, or both, and click end task, the window pops up saying the application is not responding and when I click "end now" the window closes but nothing happens. I've waited up to 20 minutes and it would sometimes close. More often I will get frustrated and will attempt to restart the computer which will often take 8 - 12 minutes. My homepage always loads just fine but when I start surfin I never know how much time I have until it freezes up (random).
Hi,

Your malwarebytes log showed some nasty stuff but it looks like you removed it. Try running this scan, its short and quick, won't fix anything but will let me know whats going on on your system. This may or may not be malware related.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
Here they are:

Hi,

Lets remove these.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

:Files
c:\wingod\SYSTEM32\SET*.tmp

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Everything else looks fine, no malware that I can see. If your still having issues I can direct you to some windows forums for help.
Ken, thanks for your help. It's a relief to know it's not malware or a virus of some sort. This laptop was a mess when I first started and is now down to a couple of predictable issues. I'm confident with the help of another expert in Windows everything will get resolved. Where do you suggest? Thanks again………..Rick OldTimer results below: ========== FILES ========== File/Folder c:\wingod\SYSTEM32\SET*.tmp not found. OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.8.0 log created on 01262009_200949

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
