My sister managed to get some sort of trojan/virus on her computer most likely from a file downloaded via a peer-to-peer program. It has caused some "spyware removal" icons to appear on the desktop, and the task manager to be un-openable. Also the computer restarts within 2-3 minutes of starting up. I couldn't run Hijack this in normal mode, because the PC would restart before the scan finished, so I have a log that was made from a scan done in Safe Mode. If a safe mode scan isn't enough, I can try again to get one in normal mode. Thanks for any help.

Hi Bobby1110,

Welcome to the forum. Since you can't boot into normal mode, I will assume that you have another computer where you can save files onto a CD or USB thumbdrive.

Go to the other computer and download SDFix and save it to your thumbdrive/burn it to your CD.

Next, boot into Safe Mode on your computer. Insert the thumbdrive/CD and double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Next,
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log (try to boot into normal mode, and see if it restarts)

Danny
Firstly, thanks for the assistance.
I booted into safe mode and began to run SDFix. When it reached the point where it says 'Be patient, this may take up to 20 minutes' the computer restarted automatically, without ever prompting to reboot. After the restart, the program did not run again, so I'm assuming it wasn't the program causing the restart.
The computer is still behaving the same way, but I have noticed some things that may help identify the problem. If left alone or just browsing through folders, the computer will restart approximately 3 minutes after the desktop becomes visible. If I attempt to run HijackThis immediately, the computer will restart the moment the status bar of the scan reaches the end (this is less than a minute after the desktop becomes visible).

And in case anything has changed, here is another HijackThis log from a new scan in Safe Mode:

1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Next, delete the following files.

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\ <–All files in this folder. Not the folder, just the files.

Then try to reboot into normal mode, and try to post a HJT Log from there.

Thanks,

Danny
I was able to remove everything from the Temp directory except for the startdrv.exe file. It keeps giving me the message "Cannot delete file, access is denied…". As for the ntos.exe, that file is not there…however, there is a file called ntoskrnl.exe, should that be removed?
Hey,

No, don't delete the ntoskrnl.exe file; this one is important.

Please open HijackThis.

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it if listed:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe

Do not reboot yet

Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, proceed to Scan.
and put a check by these.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [startdrv] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thanks,

Danny
The "F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe" listing is gone from the scan now, but the startdrv.exe file keeps coming back, as well as the "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [startdrv] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe" listing in the HijackThis scan (even after 3 tries). The PC is still behaving like it was and I still can't complete a scan in normal mode. I can post a report from a safe mode scan again tomorrow if needed, although, other than the above, nothing has changed on it.
Ok, lets try this.

1. Please download The Avenger2 by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Right click on the Avenger.zip folder and select "Extract All…"
  • Follow the prompts and extract the avenger folder to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe

Registry values to delete:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run | startdrv

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, open the avenger folder and start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon.
  • Right click on the window under Input script here:, and select Paste.
  • You can also Paste the text copied to the clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V), or click on the third button under the menu to paste it from the clipboard.
  • Click on Execute
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Delete" or "Drivers to Disable", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh Hijackthis log .

Danny
I ran the avenger program and it seemed to work well, but the startdrv.exe file came back, and I was still unable to run a hijackthis scan in normal mode (it now hangs at the "O4 - Registry values…" stage of the scan for a minute or so, then restarts the computer. The backup zip file from the Avenger program shows that it did delete the startdrv.exe file but it was recreated after the reboot. Here is the report from the avenger program and, if useful, another report from a safe mode hijackthis scan:

I'm not really sure how this happened, but I began the AVG anti-rootkit program in normal mode expecting the computer to restart at some point, but it never did, so after the scan finished I looked in the Temp directory and the startdrv.exe file was gone. I was then able to run a hijackthis scan in normal mode and still no restarts. The task manager is still un-openable however. Here are the reports from the anti-rootkit and hijackthis:

Oh wow! Getting rid of that rootkit certainly revealed alot of hidden files! The good thing is, is that we can operate in normal mode.

Now please download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HijackThis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks,

Danny
