[Closed] Slow Machine and a Possible Infection

According to my neighbor, his machine has been unacceptibly slow for months. Yesterday F-Prot (his Virus Protection) strated complaining about C:\Windows\System32\ctsvccda.exe containing W32/Trojan2.FVNU, but it is unable to quarantine it.

He takes weekly full-backups and I restored that file from as far back as three weeks ago (to a different loaction), and F-Prot *STILL* detected a virus in the restored file. Either this is a false positive from F-Prot, or they just started scanning for this virus yesterday. I have the folks at FRISK looking at the file.

My neighbor is right though: this machine is S-L-O-W!!

I did all the self-help stuff:

- Backed up the registry via ERUNT

- Ran ATF Cleaner.

- Ran Anti-Malware. Log:

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

Disable any script blocking protection
Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS.txt will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
Save both reports to your desktop.

Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove programs. Take a look down the list and get rid of any programs that you don't use or don't need any more.

DDS is reporting that F-Prot is disabled, is this true?

Yes. Sorry for the slow turn-around. I will get over to my neighbor's in the next couple of days to work on this. I want to be clear though: you want me to run ATF Cleaner again (I ran it as a prelude to posting per the site instructions). And I talked to my neighbor and yes, FProt real-time was disabled. He's not quite sure how that happened, but he's turned it back on. I'll talk to him about a donation for your time too

Hmmm. I tried uninstalling the current Java Runtime. It says it is uninstalling, the progress bar goes to 100%, I very quickly see what looks to be registry keys flash by beneath the progress bar and then the whole dialog disappears. The entry remains in the program list however and I can run the uninstall over and over with the same results.

I tried rebooting and attempting the uninstall again; same results - no joy.

I am holding off installation of the new JRE (which BTW is now up to 6U12) until I hear back from you.

I have started uninstall of useless programs.

Let's try this:

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Go to Add/Remove again and check for the old Java entry. If it is still there, please show me the JavaRa log. If not, carry on with the new installation.
