:scratch:

What started this all was NAV kept popping up saying I had several viruses. They had strange names, (SKLRR7YXVMEWUME.EXE, MLSDF8HYQHFYWOGY.EXE (Trojan Horse) and DIRO4F4OGXVNF.EXE). One of the online scanners found these also, but neither could do anything with them. They said that they where in windows/system32/. I searched there with hidden, system and inside files selected. I found nothing.

I turned System Restore Off and I did most of the scans in Safe Mode

So I went on a scanning spree (27 hours now)…

Ewido…found Tracking Cookies
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D
Advanced Spyware Remover
a-squared
Kaspersky online
BitDefender online
F-Secure online

Too many to mention. Some found nothing, some found stuff but I couldn't get logs.

I'm getting pretty burned out, so I better quit ranting and show you what I did get.

Hi I'm Angelfire777 and it'll be my pleasure to assist you in your problem. Reasearching Hijackthis logs could take sometime so please, be patient while I research a fix for you. Also, I have to let experts check my fixes first before bringing them to you. Please observe these while we work: 1.) Please stick with this thread until we are finished, do not start a new topic here or start a new thread at other forums. Do not worry, We were trained to help and never give up until we get you all fixed up. 2.) Stop if you have questions!! Never proceed if something is unclear to you. We don't want to start all over again. 3.) Avoid downloading other applications or other anti-spyware programs unless you really need to. 4.) Lastly, please be patient and never lose hope. Sometimes, it will take us several tries and posts to get something done. Sit back tight, I'll be back for you!
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.
Hi Angelfire.

I've decided to reformat and reinstall only as a last resort. I've had to do it before and it's a real pain. See, I like to test a lot of different software and that would take me months to reinstall. I know. I just had to have a new HD installed about a month or so ago.

I can't disconnect from the Internet as I have no access to any other computers, besides my nieces would kill me. They live on this thing.

I don't understand tho. I had my old HD for a year and kept it clean as a whistle. I might have slacked a bit since I got the new one.

Norton Internet Security broke about about a week ago. It still blocks and warns me of potential threats, it just won't scan anymore. Something I'm working on.

I'm not quite sure what you want me to do right now. Are you suggesting I do nothing until you get back to me? Like do no more scans or try different anti-malware yet?

Like this…

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{23BE4040-EDF5-477C-ACA1-7C8CE62B9D0A}\RP46\A0018981.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.VB.ate skipped

I said I turned System Restore off and that's supposed to clear all restore points. But isn't that what the above is? Can I at least delete these?

Or should I do absolutely nothing til I hear back from you. I don't want to make things harder or more confusing for you. Here's all the anti-malware I've been using (NAV isn't there cause it's broke)…

.
I hope I'm not getting off track or distracting you from the task at hand.

But I've been getting this a lot anymore…

[external image: Posted Image]

Where it says current site, that's not where I am at all.

I don't recall this happening until Yahoo changed there antispyware button [external image: Posted Image] to Norton antispyware button[external image: Posted Image] .

Sorry, this is something I probably should be taking up with Yahoo huh.

Guess I'm just getting a little frantic. Excuse me… [external image: Posted Image]

.
I have also downloaded…

AboutBuster
PC-cillin
TrojanHunter/TrojanHunter Guard
SecurityConsole
AVG
AOL Active Security Monitor
AOL Active Virus Shield

I haven't used any of these yet. Not until I here from you.

Just getting prepared.

I am running TrojanHunter Guard, but I have it set not to remove anything.

.
Hi, please turn on system restore if you have disabled it. It is better to have an infected system restore than nothing at all.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
==========================
You said that you have downloaded several programs for future use but I noticed that some of them are antivirus applications. I suggest you keep only 1 antivirus and uninstall all the others. Not only will 2 or more AV's slow down your pc's performance but it reduces your overall system security at the same time. Use add/remove programs in the control panel to uninstall the antivirus that you don't want to keep.

Reboot after uninstalling

==========================
Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
Here are the logs you requested. First I have a couple questions.

You told me to uninstall all AV's except 1. I use NIS 2005 as my primary. Do you mean it can cause a security threat even if the other AV's are not running?

The reason I'm asking is, I use different AV's cause they all seem to find different stuff. And is it still ok to run Online AV's?

Is it safe to run more than one Anti-spyware?

Some Anti-malware says just that, "Anti-malware or Malware Remover". Are those Spyware removers or AV's?

Anyway here you go…

You told me to uninstall all AV's except 1. I use NIS 2005 as my primary. Do you mean it can cause a security threat even if the other AV's are not running?

no, not at all but most of the AV's, when you install them, they create a service in your computer which loads when windows loads and so, they could bog down your system. As for the security threat, the main reason why it will become a security threat is because they will conflict with each other and so, it is still advisable to uninstall all other AV's but one.

The reason I'm asking is, I use different AV's cause they all seem to find different stuff. And is it still ok to run Online AV's?

you're right about that but then again, they conflict with each other. It is absolutely ok to run online AV's.

Is it safe to run more than one Anti-spyware?

yup that's ok.

Some Anti-malware says just that, "Anti-malware or Malware Remover". Are those Spyware removers or AV's?

malware is like a general term for spyware,hijackers,virus and etc. Malware is - Malicious software so, we can conclude that spyware removers and AV's are both under the general term Anti-malware

Logitech® Desktop Messenger (LDM) is a free service designed to deliver software support, news and information you can use. LDM ensures that you have simple, speedy, and effortless access to product upgrades, technology tips, and technology news and offers that are relevant to you. LDM delivers information right to your desktop, allowing you to take advantage of all of the advanced features of the Logitech products you own, while staying abreast of new computer related product and service developments (Logitech and otherwise) that are applicable to your life. Once a week, when connected to the internet, Logitech Desktop Messenger will automatically connect with Logitech servers to see if there are any new messages for you. It performs this check during idle time to avoid slowing down other applications that may be accessing the Internet. If there is a message on the server, then Logitech Desktop Messenger will download the message utilizing bandwidth that would otherwise be unused. After the message is downloaded, Logitech Desktop Messenger will wait for one minute of keyboard and mouse inactivity before displaying the message on your screen. I suggest doing all updates yourself and removing this application

Go to control panel > add/remove programs > Uninstall the items in bold if found.

Please download Blacklight
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
    This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
  • Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items…don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl….big number
Please post contents of log.
==========================
Download, unzip and run 'RootkitRevealer' from Sysinternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html

Once the program has started, press Scan and let it run.
When the scan is done, use 'File > Save' to place the logfile in a convenient location (such as the desktop). The default filename will be 'RootkitReveal.txt'.

Save your Log File
Copy/Paste the contents of that logfile into your next reply

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !
==========================
On your next reply, please include:
  • A Fresh Hijackthis log
  • blacklight log
  • rootkitrevealer log
  • A detailed description on how your computer is behaving
:wavey:

It's only been a day since I completed the tasks you suggested, so I don't know how detailed I can be yet. But I'll tell you as much as I can. I don't know how relevent this info will be.

Boot up and shutdown are real slow.

I had to reset a lot of my services settings.

Opening of any program is slow. Opening My Computer takes about 4 seconds.

Norton AV will only scan in Safe Mode. I emailed their support and they said it was probably a virus.

BearShare doesn't work anymore (I know it's a security risk, but it's my sis's computer and she likes it).

I've been testing a Beta Defrag utility, UltimateDefrag. Can't remember if my slowdown problems started at the same time I started using it or not.

That's about all I know right now.

Here's the logs you wanted…

Ok, here's the logs you requested. Don't know how long I can keep this up tho. Sis is getting really impatient about the whole thing. She wants me to Zero Fill and start over (as you suggested in the first place). It will take a couple days for me to back everything up tho, (got a lotta DVD's to edit and burn).

So, if you think this will do the trick, let me know before I clear the HD. Or, just quit messing with it and tell me to go ahead and start over.

Just want you to know, I really do appreciate all the time and effort you have put into this.

The computer is getting less and less responsive. Programs are failing. I can barely use the internet.

I'm going to send you the logs anyway in cause you have any future suggestions for me in case this happens again.

Or you can just ignore this whole thing and accept my apoligies for putting you thru all this for nothing.

your last hijackthis log was cut off..

I see you are running 3 antivirus applications at the same time. Please uninstall your other antivirus and only keep 1. Not only will 3 or more AV's slow down your pc's performance but it reduces your overall system security at the same time. Use add/remove programs in the control panel to uninstall the antivirus that you don't want to keep.

Reboot after uninstalling

if you will uninstall Norton, you might want to try this tool HERE if the uninstall isn't successful.
==========================
Go to control panel > add/remove programs > Uninstall the items in bold if found.

BearShare
This program could probably be the reason why you are having some malware troubles. Having a P2p program on your machine is like playing with fire. I suggest you remove that one.
Viewpoint

If you want to use P2p programs, there are some clean ones you can find HERE

Reboot
==========================
Please disable TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.

1. Run Spybot-S&D
2. Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3. On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5. Restart your computer
==========================
Open hijackthis > choose scan only > tick the boxes beside these entries in bold

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

close ALL browsers and windows/programs that are running, leave only hijackthis running then click "Fix Checked"
==========================

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSCONFIG\Startupreg\Load]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSCONFIG\Startupreg\Run]

My computer has been running great! I went to the link you showed me and found BearShare Lite and they say it's clean. I'm gonna install it and see if my sis notices the difference. If she does, I'll have to install Pro again :( .

I think I'm pretty clean now…
