I've spent time in the forums looking for answers, it seems everyone has a different case. I put my hijackthis log below. Would love to see some light shed on this problem.

I use F-Secure which continually pops up and tells me I have a malicious code in a file that does not exist (so I cannot manually delete it). I did get rid of the Bagle.mail virus today. Still have the malicious code popping up from F-Secure.

Some things I've done: ran AdAware, Webroot Spy Sweep (free version), F-Secure virus scan, cleaned up my computer with system tools (disk cleanup) and defragmented C drive.

F-Secure calls it "Trojan-Spy.Win32.small.ez" and said it was in C:\System VolumeInformation\_restore{4B7FE1EA-EA42-41DE-866D-4B5B995BB87B}\RP693\A0085131.DLL which does not exist according to my naked eye. When I typed in that C drive search, it says access denied to System Volume Information.

How did I get this? Probably the UTorrent software I downloaded a week ago

There are 2 things I was thinking of trying….. (found it here: http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,28…991594,00.html)

1) empty out the System Restore folder—by turning off System Restore for all drives, rebooting, and then turning it back on again. This will cause all the System Restore points to be deleted, but a fresh one will be created at the next shutdown. (If the system is in generally good shape barring the presence of a virus in the System Restore repository, erasing the System Restore folder is usually not that big a loss

or

2) booting to Safe Mode, making System Folders accessible through Folder Options and running the virus scan on the System Volume Information folder. This allows me to keep System Restore directories which may come in handy since I'm obviously battling viruses

Any thoughts?
Welcome to the forum :wavey:

You've got a little more going on than the one entry you've posted about….

We'll take care of that, after we get everything else cleaned up.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O1 - Hosts: 216.93.168.167 auto.search.msn.com

O1 - Hosts: comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7B55BB05-0B4D-44fd-81A6-B136188F5DEB} - C:\WINDOWS\questmod-1.dll (file missing)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E3215F20-3212-11D6-9F8B-00D0B743919D} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: ZeroBar - {F5735C15-1FB2-41FE-BA12-242757E69DDE} - C:\Program Files\NetZero\Toolbar.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pcnyf] C:\WINDOWS\pcnyf.exe

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200305…meInstaller.exe

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: index.dat

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\pcnyf.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread.

I'd also like you to do this:

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

c:\windows\system32\service.exe

Let me know the results.

You don't have to try all three. If one says it's "infected", you can stop there.

Be sure you submit the right file.

I need a second opinion on this one:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Service.exe

NOT this one:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe

Please note the difference.
:)
Thank you so much for putting your time into helping me! The new Hijack This! log is below. I tried to delete O20 and I got this error:
"An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: index.dat)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2800.1106
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan."

I continued and the rest were taken care of.

Note: I tried something I read in another forum before seeing your message, but I think I messed something up;
The instructions were:
My Computer. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders. 4. Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change. 5. Click OK. 6. Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it

I found System Volume Information, but it was transparent and I couldn't open it. I clicked on Properties and saw that there was nothing in it (no memory, no files, etc). Then I went to advanced options and clicked all of those boxes to give myself access. I still didn't see anything so I got back into those Advanced options and unchecked the boxes (trying to undo what I did) and it didn't look the same afterward. I fear I messed it up…… So I got out completely and rebooted to normal.

#@!!% Anyone who creates a virus should be shot!!
Yes, sorry. I did scan that file and it found no viruses.

Another mention, I scanned my system yesterday (took hours) and it detected/destroyed the Bagle.mail virus (I assume it is the same as the Beagle virus, but not sure)

Currently at http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus to do a scan there
Please navigate to this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Service.exe

Put your cursor on it, and post back all the info that shows in the "balloon".

I still think it is "no good".

Are you experiencing pop-ups or re-directs?
I tried both Services and services to be sure…..

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus says I am clean
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ says I am infected (details below)
http://virustotal.com …..no need to try? already know I am infected

Can you just delete it, or do you get the "File in use" error message?

BE SURE YOU DELETE THE CORRECT ONE:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Service.exe <– delete this one

NOT THIS ONE:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\services.exe <– KEEP THIS ONE!!!
Dumb question on my part….

First pull up the task manager, by pressing keys at the same time.

Click on the "Processes" tab.

Click on "Image name" to sort them alphabetically

Find/ on service.exe, and choose "End process"

OK any prompts. Close the task manager.

Now, can you delete it?
Probably just "adware". Do you still have the virus in "system restore" being detected, or any other problem with system restore? After getting rid of "service.exe", you should be "clean". :)
Thank you again for all of your time! F-Secure will pop up and let me know within the hour if I still have a malicious code in "System Volume Information."
