Hi to the wonderful volunteer who has decided to read this post,

I posted a similar topic previously but in my nub fashion replied with an extra thought. I realize now that is why I have not received a resp. Therefore, could you please tell me how to remove that (a) topic? Thanks. How do I know I am hijacked by malware?

1) pop-ups in both ie (which I don't even use) and firefox (default)
2) computer gets really slow when explorer is running (I have managed to end explorer and get some work done using my rocketdock)
3) Just recently my computer shut-down without myself or any of my known programs initiating it.
4) McAfee detects vundo and generic.dx trojans
5) I cannot activate automatic updates

Here is are my logs:

Hope that is a good start. Oh! I have also created a backup log with ERUNT and used ATF cleaner. Before this I followed McAfees advice: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp…;virus_k=127690. That helped a little but did not solve the problem. Lastly, I should mention that I have system recovery turned off and have not created a new restore point. Should I do that?

Thanks a million. Sorry if I do not reply until tomorrow.

Hi Scud,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi TomK,

:notworthy: Thank you for responding to my distress call. I made the mistake of re-running combofix because McAfee became reactivated and interfered with the 1st run (see attached jpeg). How does this affect my situation?

Note: I did deactivate it but for some reason it re-activated. further the link you provide for deactivating antivirus software did not seem to apply to my version of McAfee ie there is no exit option and double clicking does nothing. So I right-clicked, left-clicked on virus-scan enterprise and left-clicked disable on -acess scan).

Here are the logs from the 1st and 2nd run, respectively:

1st:
ComboFix 08-12-30.02 - User 2008-12-31 15:07:47.1 - NTFSx86

Thank you so for and sorry about the blunder,
-Scud
Scud,

You've done perfect so far.

Looks like you connect a multitude of thumbdrives to this computer. Are these yours or friends? It appears malware may be being passed back and forth between computers on these drives. I'd suggest that you don't use them anymore until we are done here. Then connect them all (or at least any you are going to allow to be connected to your computer) and run Malwarebytes and select full scan. Be sure that you then select all drives so that the thumb drives are scanned also. Now to carry on here:

uTorrent
You have uTorrent, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm://http://www.techweb.com/wire/1605005…cles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall uTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed
TomK,

First off thanks for the encouragement.

Second, I do use thumb drives 2 (which are my own, I use for work material and at work for transfer of files do you think malwarebytes will remove that virus(es)?) and ipods (do you know if the virus(es) compatible with ipods?).

Third, uTorrent has been removed (as you will see), thank you for pointing that out.

Fourth, the logs as you requested:

Lastly, thank you for everything thus far. I am truely not worthy :notworthy:
-Scud
Scud,

I'm do not believe anything here will target an Ipod.

I would definitely run Mbam on any other computer you put those thumbdrives in. If you do that, and don't notice any problems, you're probably OK.

what a let down :pullhair: ):

Not a let down. It's what we were hoping for. :yeah:

Now, I made a syntax error in part of the script. We need to run CF again.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::

    Folder::

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""

    Driver::

Please also give me one more HijackThis log.
Hi TomK,

Before I begin my questioning let me again thank you for your prompt assistance. Ok now for the 20 questions, actually just a couple.

Will that typo in the combofix script affect anything (ie the Kapersky scan or my computer etc.)? Once again my virus scan interfered with the combo log (see attached photo) even though I had disabled it. I should mention that the windows security alert has at startup has recently changed from "Virus-scan enterpise and Windows updates are off (or however it is technically written)" to " Virus-scan enterprise and Spyware-scan enterprise are off". Is this possibly progress? Or adaption (or further infection) by the virus?

Ok now as requester here are the logs

Awaiting further instruction :D
-Scud
Scud,

Looks like everything went fine.

Will that typo in the combofix script affect anything

Nope. It didn't make sense to CF so it was just ignored (it worked this time :P)

Is this possibly progress?

Yes. It is now time to turn everything back on because:

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hey Tomk, :woot: Sounds just just a couple more questions: 1) You suggest using sys restore? I thought it was more advisable (McAfee etc.) to disable it. 2) How do I set a new restore point? –> My comp –> prop. etc? 3) If everything is ok (it is def much better because I can now complete automatic updates), why then is my comp starting up with the viruscan etc off (see attached jpg)? Should I reinstall McAfee? 4) I use firefox so will spywareblaster actually help me? or is there and equivalent alternative? 5) Oh yeah and lastly did you know you are amazing? Thanks a million for the help. I will definitely look into the classroom so that someday maybe I can help out as much as you did. Best Regards, -Scud
Scud,

1) You suggest using sys restore? I thought it was more advisable (McAfee etc.) to disable it.

I (as well as many others) believe that even a contaminated restore point is better than no restore point. Nothing in the "restore information" can harm you unless you actually restore with it. It is just there in stasis. It doesn't do anything. That's why we set a new one when we believe you are clean, and then remove the old ones (that may be contaminated).

2) How do I set a new restore point?

When you did the whole Combofix /u thing, a new one one should have been set. You can do this manually by:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

why then is my comp starting up with the viruscan etc off

They had to be shut down to allow Combofix to do it's thing. You now need to turn them back on.

Should I reinstall McAfee?

You should only have to turn it back on. If that's a problem, you can reinstall (be sure to update it).

4) I use firefox so will spywareblaster actually help me? or is there and equivalent alternative?

Spyware Blaster also works with Firefox.

I will definitely look into the classroom

Good. I was accepted into the classroom 1/16/08 (coming up on my anniversary). I have enjoyed my time here. I find it a great hobby.

You are very welcome!

Glad we could help.

Have a Happy New Year.

Good Luck and Be Well.
TomK, Couple (more like a million, sorry) more questions if that is ok? When I did the combofix /u thing that created a new restore point, but I don't know that name so why then is it important to make the other one recognizable? You see where my confusion lies? Did combofix /u also remove all previous restore points? If so I think I will leave it as is. Having said all this, is it necessary to leave system restore on? In regards to the McAfee I have turned it back on in the same way that I turn it off. By either R-clicking on the systray icon and selecting disable/enable or going to the virus scan console and selecting disable/enable. Regardless of me doing this it still starts up with that error message I posted as an attachment in my previous post (This error message only began to happen after I got the Vundo). That is why I am inquiring about reinstalling/updating, if indeed my system is clean. In regards to winpatrol, I currently have startup lite, are they equivalent? I see that winpatrol also does a whole lot of monitoring. Therefore, should I get rid of startup lite and only use winpatrol? Last but not least, is it okay to keep Malwarebytes for the occasion quick scan, when maybe I think the system has been compromised? If so do I need to disable McAfee's on-access-scan when I want to do a Malwarebytes scan? Lol. I know this a loaded Reply so I completely understand if you a) take your time or B) don't have the time to take. Thanks again for all of your help. Have a very Happy New Year as well :wavey: , -Scud
Scud, When you ran the Combofix uninstall routine, a new restore point should have been created and the old ones removed. If you looked through the restore points, that is what you should fine. However, there is nothing wrong with you doing this procedure manually. The information that I provided you is what I would have had you do if we had not ran Combofix. You can do this procedure and have a recognizable name on the restore point and it won't hurt a thing. Up to you. :) This restore point will take you back to now. Every time you make changes to your system (install new programs etc), this restore point won't mean as much. This is why you need to leave restore on. If you shut off system restore and then turn it back on, you will automatically erase all the old points leaving you nothing to restore too. Does this make sense? McAfee: When you "Click the balloon to fix.." does it allow you to enable real-time scanning (or something like that)? I have never had this program so I'm doing some guessing here. Try doing both of the things you did. Start McAfee and enable, and also right click on the icon and start real-time scanning. One of the things that Vundo often does is shut off security programs. You may have to reinstall McAfee to straighten it out. I don't know anything about startup lite (and honestly very little about winpatrol). You may have to ask the Tech experts over in the Other Software forum. I would absolutely recommend that you keep Mbam. Update it and run it once a month. Any more questions? Honestly, I don't mind. I may not know the answer but I don't mind the question.
TomK, The restore point business makes sense. Thank you clarifying that. I will look into the other software forum I will try a few more restarts and if McAfee cannot get its act together I will reinstall it. If however, that doesn't work do you mind if I PM you? ie could I still be infected with the Vundo and maybe we missed it? (sorry to suggest that I know you are very thorough an probably don't miss a beat). Mbam is awesome and is definitely gonna stay on my machine/ future machines. That's it for me. Thanks again for all of your help. Regards, -Scud
Scud,

maybe we missed it?

Definitely possible. Vundo also may have "scrambled" McAfee. (it happens). If it causes you trouble after the a reinstall, definitely hit me back up.
