Hi,
I have just discovered a problem with My PC. It has become infected with either a virus or malware etc. The symptoms are that I now have countless IE pop up windows enoying me every few minutes. Some are advertising pages, whilst others are blank.
I've ran a scan with SPYBOT 'search and destroy', however the pop ups remain. I've also ran adaware, and have AVG anti virus installed. All are up to date.
Since reading several posts on this issue, I've decided to run Hijackthis and post the log file below to see if anyone can be of assistance.

Regards

EFRAM

Hello EFRAM and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

B. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (If using Windows Vista, be sure to "Run As Administrator")
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

C. Please also post a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Trevuren, and thank you so much for your time. I have one question before completing these tasks. You've recommended that I download AFT Cleaner, however I'm using Windows Vista, yet it states that this program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. Is there a VIsta version? regards EFRAM

Hi Trevuren,

Here is the MBAM log and Hijakthis log.
Also, I think there may have been an issue with running MBAM with spybot installed, as there seemed to be some conflicted.

There is a file in your log of which I am unsure. For that reason, I need you to submit it to Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\Users\Anderson\svchost.exe

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

Regards,

Trevuren

The pop ups no longer appear, however I've found that it's now difficult to click on some links on pages, and my system is still very slow. Cheers EFRAM

You may have to right click on this application and choose "Run as Administrator"

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  • An additional text file, Extra.txt, will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
  • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.
Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

What DSS will do:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.

Post Logs:
  • DSS Scan Results: contents of 1) Main.txt and 2) Extra.txt

A. To repair the faulty file associations, please do the following:
  • Make sure that DSS.exe is located on your Desktop.
  • Click on your START button, then choose Run. A little box will appear.
  • Now copy and paste all the following in bold (including the "" marks into the run box and click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • This will start DSS in a different way. A small window will appear.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.

Post the contents of that logfile with your next post
.

B. Now we must disable some security programs for they may interfere with our fix. Please remember to re-enable them after we have finished our work.

SPYBOT TEATIMER
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

WINDOWS DEFENDER
  • Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
  • Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
  • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
  • Click Save.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Turn on real-time protection" check box.)

C. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

  • To enable the viewing of Hidden files :
    • Click on the Start button.
    • Click on the Control Panel menu option.
    • When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:
    • If you are in the Classic View
      • Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
      • Click on the View tab.
      • Go to step 6.
    • If you are in the Control Panel Home
      • Click on the Appearance and Personalization link .
      • Click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
      • Go to step 6.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
    • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
    • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
    • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and EXIT My Computer.
    • Now Windows Vista is configured to show all hidden files.

  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyClean] C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner\SpyClean.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\Users\Anderson\AppData\Local\Temp\ljJDTjKb.dll,c
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Host Process] C:\Users\Anderson\svchost.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [1c1a6320] rundll32.exe "C:\Users\Anderson\AppData\Local\Temp\wnstybci.dll",b

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. Also please tell me how things are running. It is normal for Windows to be slow when you startup, we cleaned out the cache and it will take a bit of browsing to re-populate everything.

Your HijackThis log is clean. Things are going very well so far. But that represents only certain registry entries. To be sure, I will ask you to perform an on line Kaspersky scan which takes about 1 hour and to post the results. If there are any more "baddies" lurking, this scanner will find them:

Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
