Hi guys, thanks in advance for all you do … :) !!!!

Since receiving the most recent Windows updates, i've noticed some strange behavior and need your help to resolve it. As an IE (only) user i guess it serves me right but please take some time to set me straight.

Windows/Microsoft updates appear current … ATF, CCleaner and (zone alarm) ZASS 8.0 have been run prior to MBAM & HJT … nothing found in either scan
Here are a few of the "oddities" in the system behavior i've noticed:

** daily routine deletion of browsing history will not run from the homepage (yahoo), it does engage from the Control Panel

** occasional random page scrolling without command or mouse action

** ZASS notice/request for permission "iexplore.exe" is trying to monitor activities on this computer - permission regularly denied
(this notice appears when trying to delete browsing from either toolbar and when system re-started)

** Occasionally, yahoo sign-in page (on-screen)presentation is different … wondering if it's a re-direction

After completing your pre-cleaning instructions (with "hidden" files access) , here are the reports.

Hi Granny Mouse,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed
Granny Mouse, If you actually have an AV installed on this machine like you did on the other one, I'd like you to still try Kaspersky Online.
Well TomK, the Kaspersky scan also showed -0- infections / suspicious files … no report to save.

here's a current HJT for this computer … i was just wondering, how many 'svchost.exe' processes are supposed to be active at one time ?? It seems both computers have 4 of those processes operational, is this normal ? For some reason i am thinking only 2 should be active at once. ah, just asking.

Granny Mouse,

Multiple instances of svchost.exe is normal. I have six running. You can read a pretty good explanation here.

Again, I don't have any magic fix here. Do the following and then tell me if you notice any difference (use it a little before responding back).

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaul…rch/search.html
      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaul…//www.yahoo.com
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.
Hey there TomK … please forgive my delay … a little confused by the instructions but i figured it out … right instruction, wrong post ;( … however, am in the process of cleaning those HJT's … and completing the instructions for each. Will touch base with some of your newer emails once i am caught up to you. Was wondering why i was instructed to remove lines that didn't exist (on That computer) :) … hang in there with me, i'm slow but i'm gettin' it :) Ok, now that i'm on the right path, would it be advisable to use a different browser ?? Firefox has been suggested repeatedly and i'm curious of your opinion. Will touch base again when i'm done with these instructions … thanks for your help thus far !!! mouse
Granny Mouse,

Was wondering why i was instructed to remove lines that didn't exist

Those are orphaned entries. Your registry was looking for files that don't exist. Cleaning those up should help speed things up slightly and potentially eliminate problems down the road.

I like Firefox. However, your windows computer will always use Internet Explorer at least in the background so it needs to be protected. There is more malware that targets IE vulnerabilites than there are ones that target Firefox. This is because there are way more computers running IE than Firefox. Firefox does get targeted more and more as it's popularity increases. I suggest you try Firefox. Use it a little and see what you think.
