Hi, First of all I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Chistmas, and a Happy New Year! Last year I had a problem which L.D. Tate was able to solve, and now I'm back again with another problem. My desktop keeps getting taken over, and I run my spyware programs.(Spyzooka, Superantispyware), and find trojans and spyware, delete it, but they come right back. I was told it was probably the smitfaud malware that infected my computer, so I downloaded the Smitfraudfix.exe file, and the Smitren fix file, but even in safe mode, these programs will not open, I"m able to unzip file, and open folder, but when I double click on the command file, a screen flashes on my monitor so fast that I can't even read it, and then it's gone. I regularly run the ATF program, and have tried every trick I know to delete this malware that my computer is sick with. I give up!!! Lol. I need help from someone, like you guys, who have seen and solved problems even much worse than this. This is the worst bug I've gotten on my machine in the four years I've owned it. I have Hijack this on my computer, and also erunt. I've even downloaded AVG, but it find bugs, deletes them, and they come right back. I've deleted all toolbars, and everything that I could think of that might be harbouring this bug. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I'm attaching a logfile from hijack this.

Hello and Welcome back to the Forum.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.

There's a new version of HijackThis.

Click the "Save" button.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button below to post the new HJT log and report.txt
Happy New Year!! And thank you soooo much for joining "The "Fight". I was hoping that it would be you. Here is the logfile you requested, and thanks again!!

Hi L. D.,
I ran the mbam program and deleted everything it found. Then created a new HJT log. I then tried to open the smitfraudfix command file, to see if it would now open, still doesn't. I then ran Spyzooka antispyware program and it found 5 spyware cookies. I had run it earlier this morning and deleted 14 spyware. But they always come back. I'm attaching the two logs you requested.

Thanks again for your help!
You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on. Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LD,

I ran combofix and am sending you a log file. And then to see how my machine is running I first ran Superantispyware which found 5 spyware cookies, which I deleted. Which are the same ones I deleted before shutting down my computer last night. I then tried to open the smitfraudfix file, and to my great surprise it opened for the first time!! I then ran it in safe mode, and am including a log file. I am also including a HJT log file. Just the fact that I was able to open and run the smitfraudfix file shows me that We are definitely making progress. Again thanks so much for taking the time to help me!!

Thanks again for your help!
Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi LT, Well, you did it again. I forgot how fast my computer could be! I'm having no trouble with pop-ups, or being redirected anymore. I'm loving life right now. This is a great way to start the New Year out! I can't thank you enough for helping me. I made the changes you recommended and downloaded and installed winpatrol. I'll install the host file later this evening. LTtate, you ARE the man!!! :notworthy: Thanks again my friend.
