anybody here who tried deep freeze?

Hello.

I want to use it but a friend said he reinstalled his OS jsut because of that. But based on reviews, i think it's a good one. but might have problems with my system(which happens to be an nVidia nForce mobo same as my friend's).

I have never tried Deep Freeze myself, so can't say anything
about it. But I do happen to use something up that alley.

I use a virtuel program called Returnil. The main difference here, is
that with Returnil you allocate a chunk of your HD space to a
virtuel drive. Within that virtuel enviroment, your system is being
completly mirrored. Anything runned within that drive, can only
affect that drive. I use it mainly to test programs, giving them a
trial period so to speak. So I can determine the impact a true
install would have. This only works with programs that doesn't
require a reboot, as a reboot resets everything that transpired
in that virtuel drive. Any change to your system is instantly nullified
upon a reboot, except for some very rare rootkits. There is also a
little performance boost in how well windows runs. Sounds amazing?
Well it is. Returnil loads everything directly to your physical memory
and nothing else, so no use of swapfile.

Returnil

You can try it, as it doesn't require anything else than an install,
and it is likewise as easy to un-install. But do read up on it, as there
is more to it. Like how to save something for keeps while running it etc.
Be sure to read some of the forum posts etc.

Hello Silver. I have tried DeepFreeze and I must say it is a very efficient an useful utility for servers and corporates but I would not recommend it for home use. I once had a friend who installed it on his computer and later could not install, uninstall or make even any minor changes to his system because DeepFreeze avoided that. Finally, I figured out the problem and had to thaw the program before I could restore his computer to normal functioning. So, if you can get the hang of the program, it is a very good one. Mohit, my friend did everything to thaw it but he couldn't find a way to open the program to thaw it.to thaw it? that doesn't sound right! I don't know, he said he already checked everything he could but he said nothing worked. So i checked on this program and found out some issues with it.So i'm afraid something happens. But thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I would think about getting it first since it's for home use as well. As to Abydos' Returnil, it really sounds interesting. i will check on it and might try this. But i will have to get as much info as i can and weigh these two. Thanks again to both of you!!! Hi guys!!! Abydos, I already checked pros and cons. I think I'm gonna like it. By the way, have you had any issues with it so far? Have you at tried uninstalling it without problems? Mohit, As far as the reviews and info regarding these two software i personally think Returnil would be a better choice. But again i will still check further before installing. Personally I have had no issues with the use of it. Un-installing neither.
That said, I won't say that it can't happen, no machines / configurations
are alike. Every new program installed alters the premises. That goes
for all programs, who can say 100% which programs won't conflict with
another unless tried out.

I use it mainly for testing. And have it installed on a old machine as well,
that my kids are using. Far less screwups when they can't resist that temp-
tation of curiousity and goes pilfering things best left alone
