Hello;

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, 1.8 P-4 with 1GB of RDRAM, a nVidia 6200 Video card with 256 RAM and a 80 GB HD that is only about1/3 full. The system is going on 6 years old and was recently upgraded to the present specs. We're trying to squeeze another year or so out of it before going for a whole new system.

Fortunately, it has been some time since I've had to post here with a problem and I'm sure some of the security and clean-up software that I've installed may no longer be recommended. Those may or may not be contributing factors to my situation. In addition to running AVG anti-virus, ThreatFire and SpySweeper, I use the Windows XP firewall. I also run the free version of AdAware 2007 as a double check on Spysweeper (I do not run it in real time mode). I also regularly run CCleaner, Prefetch Cleaner and then manually remove any temp files that might have been missed. I have used Diskeeper for a couple of years now to keep the hard drive defragmented without any problems that I've noticed from that program. I also use Tuneup 2007, which I have recently been advised to remove from my system as its effectiveness may be questionable. Finally, in about a week, the HP printer will be history as will any programs related to it.

My browser of choice is Firefox 2.0.0.12 and I'm aware of the controversy that there may be a serious memory leak in the program.

Recently, I've begun experiencing situations where my system suddenly freezes up and the only way out is to power off and restart the computer. I've also noticed system slowdowns not related to any browser issues. My daughter has installed Real Arcade and has dowloaded many games for use it in. My wife is less than cautious about downloading and opening links to questionable sites.

Here is my HJT log:

Thank you very much for the assistance

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry about the delay in responding

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for responding to my request for help. Despite my concerted efforts to keep the garbage out using CCleaner, which has helped considerably, I still am experiencing slow down in program responsiveness and occasionally some programs (there is no particular pattern as to which programs are affected) stop responding entirely and I have to use the task manager to close it out. Yesterday, while installing our new Canon MP830, I started to cull out some of the programs we no longer use. I also switched from AdAware 2007 to Spybot S & D as my alternate spyware program (it is not set for real time protection as SpySweeper handles that chore since I paid for it). The reason for the switch was that AdAware just took to long to run even the simple scan and would sometimes just freeze up.

My main concern is that my wife and especially my daughter are a bit cavalier when it comes to security and often download questionable items and games.

That said, should you not find any significant malware issues, I would greatly appreciate your guidance in cleaning up any questionable programs either because of security weaknesses or lack of usefulness. I would also very much appreciate some recommendations as to a good secure password program that would work with a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader I just ordered, as I understand it functions without any encryption. The reviews I read indicated something more was needed for added security for sensitive passwords, such as those that might involve financial transactions. Last, somehow we have an overabundance of Fonts and a good free or inexpensive font manager would be useful in resolving that situation.

I place myself in your more experience hands. First is the most recent HJT log which will be followed by the Uninstall log you requested. Again, i thank you for your time and assistance.

Hi

Im not sure about encryption programs, Ive no use for them. It's something for you task in of ther forum rooms when you are done here.

Im not seeing anything sinister in the HijackThis log, but it doesnt tell the whole story.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which is needed for the Kaspersky Scan, keep ALL programs closed until the scan is complete. This includes your anti-virus. Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet.Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.
Thanks for your help. I'll advise if anything unexpected shows up in the Kaspersky virus scan. I'll also check the forum for advice on a good password program. Gerry
Hi; Well, Kaspersky came up clean which is nice. I don't know if this is the proper place to ask but I just installed Sysinternals' Autoruns and while doing a cursory check of what's listed, I found two entries for something called Black Ice Port Monitor for Windows 95. I have no idea what it is or how it came to be on my system. I did a system search and found no other Black Ice entries. First, what is it? If nonessential, as I suspect, can I safely delete these two entries from within Autoruns?
As for as I can tell it's a port monitor for printers. Probably unnecessary and sounds like a legacy driver. Certainly disable it, and if unneeded, remove.

It certainly appears as though your problem isnt malware related. We can run one more scan to be sure, a quicker one.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
