The Issue:
It's been about 24 hrs since my laptop got infected. My firefox was lagging and then my laptop automatically restarted last night. I unhooked my lan cable as it restarted and after it finished loading my McAfee anti-virus told me "svchost.exe" was trying to access the internet. Then a pop-up message told me I was infected with "Win32.NetSky.Q" and to fix the problem with a program called Perfect Defender 2009. In my haste, I didn't really check the source as carefully and just downloaded the program. After it ran a scan, the program told me I had 7 threats on my computer: 1. Win32.NetSky.Q / 2. Spyware.NOD17 / 3. Packed.MassAccess / 4. Dialer.Lox / 5. HackTool.DeepPenetration / 6. Spyware.CobraSpy / (I forgot to write down the 7th…) It said I needed to purchase the program to fix the problems, which I did not do.

What I've done on my own:
After surviving the heart attack resulting from the list of high risk threats, I decided to do a System Restore. I'm not sure if this was a smart thing to do… I did it a few times (3), before settling on Dec 2nd's system restore point. Then I had to fix the errors in my McAfee and reinstall Windows System Pack 3. My McAfee scans didn't show any problems on my computer, but I was still suspicious so I went online to use Trend Micro Housecall. It was my first time using this online scan. I used this version: http://prerelease.trendmicro-europe.com/hc66/launch/. Unfortunately, as the updates were installing on my computer my McAfee caught and removed "Generic.dx Trojan" 3 times (the source was the housecall updates)! I still went through with the scan but toward the end my firefox was not responding and I had to close the browser. Since this morning I've been installing several Anti-Malware programs and scanning my computer. (I know it's inefficient to run several programs at the same time.) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware caught 6 threats: 1. Adware.Minibug / 2. Adware.Coupons / 3. Rogue.PerfectDefender (detected twice) 4. Trojan.FakeAlert (detected twice). This is how I found out that the Perfect Defender 2009 I downloaded earlier was malware… I tried to go back and use: http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ but the scanner was perpetually "updating" so I gave up. Then I downloaded SUPER AntiSpyware, which detected nothing. Then Trojan Remover and a-squared. The latter program kept detecting "Trace.Directory.SpyWare.MateWatcher!A2" and I haven't been able to get rid of it.

I'm really hoping someone out there can help me solve my computer issues. I'm in the midst of finals week at uni and I'm so afraid of compromising my school and financial information because it's a trojan.

List of programs I use and recently downloaded:
McAfee - it is bundled with anti-virus and anti-spyware; it said i had to remove spybot search and destroy before installing.
Spyware Blaster
Trend Micro Housecall 6.6, 6.5
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Super AntiSpyware
Trojan Remover
a-squared
HijackThis
Erunt

Additional concerns:
Can someone tell me which anti-malware programs to delete? Also, how do I remove the trend micro housecall files from my laptop?

Here's my log:

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi LDTate, thanks for helping me sort through this!

I've included both logs below. I had to manually disable the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware features of my McAfee (there was no "Exit" option when I right-clicked on the System Tray icon). Was I supposed to disable SuperAntiSpyware? I removed the icon from the System Tray, so I figured it wasn't necessary to disable… Please tell me if I'm wrong.

As for my laptop's behavior, I haven't really noticed any obvious signs of problems… For instance, no pop-ups or hijacked homepage of my browser… Of course, I should note that I have been keeping my laptop disconnected from the internet. My McAfee seems operable and I have no internet connection problems. Also, I have no problems with lagging or speed in general. Mostly I'm afraid the problem is dormant for the time being…

The only incident that occurred since my first post is that my laptop either shut down or restarted on its own once. I thought it had gone into hibernation because the power button was blinking… But after pressing it to start my computer, it started loading from the beginning. There was a brief flash of a blue screen with a bunch of text (computer data being loaded, I'm guessing?) at the beginning. I didn't get a close look because I stepped away from the computer. Then when everything loaded a windows alert told me my laptop recovered from a serious error.

I've also scanned my computer with MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware several times. Both programs detected no malware. But after running A Squared, "Trace.Directory.SpyWare.MateWatcher!A2" continues to be detected. I tried to quarantine it, but it doesn't show up under the list of quarantined items. Also, even after deleting it, it always shows up again after rescanning.

One last thing - it seems I don't have the recovery console installed… but I didn't see any prompts to download and install it prior to ComboFix operating…

A Squared, "Trace.Directory.SpyWare.MateWatcher!A2" continues to be detected.

I take it, it doesn't give you a file name or location?

Please use the Internet Explorer browser and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
The Kaspersky scan detected no malware. Not sure what this means… I went back to check the A Squared log and the location of the detection was c:\workssetup Question: Is it okay/safe to access email and other sites that require passwords now?
Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

Insert file name

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

Hi LDTate, I think you forgot to add which file I should upload for analysis. Here's an update on my computer: I've been keeping it plugged in to the internet. Just now, my McAfee caught "Tool-NirCmd" (Potentially Unwanted Program). File: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1D1D6F93-1B0C-4060-8D79-09274A81BD2A}\RP421\A0086967.com Process: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe Svchost.exe was trying to access the internet back in my first post, after my computer restarted automatically.

I went back to check the A Squared log and the location of the detection was c:\workssetup

Is that the file name? Or it it c:\workssetup.exe? Or is it in the folder c:\workssetup?

C:\System Volume Information\_restore

Don't worry about anything located there at this time. We will be cleaning that out.
Hi LDTate,

Still waiting for the name of the file I should upload to Jotti.

Is that the file name? Or it it c:\workssetup.exe? Or is it in the folder c:\workssetup?

The log only states c:\workssetup, which I'm guessing indicates the folder. There's no .exe at the end.

More computer updates:
Since the Tool-NirCmd detection, MalwareBytes detected and quarantined 2 files of Rogue.PerfectDefender. McAfee also repaired and removed Generic.dx (Trojan) 3 times and FakeAlert-AB (Trojan). They're all located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore (with the exception of one Generic.dx located in my Firefox application), which you've already mentioned we'll be cleaning out.

Thanks for the help so far LDTate!

——Edit
Here's the latest A2 detection (new Kazaa spyware detected):
c:\workssetup detected: Trace.Directory.SpyWare.MateWatcher!A2
Key: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2062526360-3442238122-18100808-1006\software\kazaa detected: Trace.Registry.KaZaA!A2
This should take care of anything in System Volume Information\_restore

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

    Now try your scans again.
Hi LDTate,

Having a bit of trouble running Combofix /u

The first time I tried it, I think it started working. But then McAfee detected RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171 (File: C:\32788R22FWJFW\psexec.cfexe) and the file was repaired and quarantined. When that happened ComboFix was uninstalled from my computer.

I went back to install it, but running Combofix /u doesn't work. I get a windows alert saying "Windows cannot find 'ComboFix'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

I've tried restoring the above file. It restored successfully but I still get the same message above. I restarted my computer after restoring and it's the same. Not sure what to do now.

I've still been scanning my computer occasionally and it's only A2 that picks up malware. The same 'workssetup' trace and a new one:

c:\workssetup detected: Trace.Directory.SpyWare.MateWatcher!A2
C:\Documents and Settings\Jennie\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\mbhbwx6s.default\cookies.sqlite:1229742518515625 detected: Trace.TrackingCookie.webtrends!A2

c:\workssetup detected: Trace.Directory.SpyWare.MateWatcher!A2
C:\Documents and Settings\Jennie\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\mbhbwx6s.default\cookies.sqlite:1229742518515625 detected: Trace.TrackingCookie.webtrends!A2

Those are only cookies. You get those anytime you go to the internet.

Combofix /u uninstalls combofix.

You can remove these leftover files and folders if listed:
C:\ComboFix
C:\QooBox
C:\combofix.txt
C:\combofix-quarantine-files.txt
To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week

(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

[*] Winpatrol

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.

Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
