Hello, and thanks for helping us less savy computer users.

What is happening is the Local Area Connection is always send / recieving data, and I am not sure why.

The computer takes way longer than it should to complete some tasks that once took only seconds.

Defraged, scaned with Symantec real time & nightly, did a Ad-aware scan and found/ cleaned a few small things ( have since uninstaled Ad-aware), scanned with Spybot and found / cleaned a few items, scanned with Scotty- dissabled or removed unwanted start up processes, ran windows defender today- found nothing (dissabled real time), and now it still seems to be dragging.

Went ahead and created back up points with ERUNT and through Windows.

Sooo here is the HJT file:

Hello GrideNWA

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Viewpoint, it installs without your knowledge or consent, uses system resources and basically is not needed for anything.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic
Ken Thanks for the help! No worries on the time frame, just trying to get this box up and running smooth! It still seems to be hitting the "local area connection", but it seems to not happen all the time, just like every 30 seconds or so.. sometimes longer. The other odd thing is that it takes a long time to bring up the print dialoge box box in all programs. It just took approx 2 min to come up from notepad before could even start selecting pages/ printer/ preferences/ etc. Here is the log: # version=4 # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.56 # OnlineScannerDLLA.dll=1, 0, 0, 51 # OnlineScannerDLLW.dll=1, 0, 0, 51 # OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe=1, 0, 0, 49 # vers_standard_module=3682 (20081210) # vers_arch_module=1.064 (20080214) # vers_adv_heur_module=1.064 (20070717) # EOSSerial=f403709877fb6a4aa638fe5394c56add # end=finished # remove_checked=true # unwanted_checked=true # utc_time=2008-12-10 06:23:10 # local_time=2008-12-10 12:23:10 (-0600, Central Standard Time) # country="United States" # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # scanned=592708 # found=4 # scan_time=7014 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP793\A0044795.EXE Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application (unable to clean - deleted) 00000000000000000000000000000000 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP793\A0044801.EXE Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application (unable to clean - deleted) 00000000000000000000000000000000 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP793\A0044802.EXE Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application (unable to clean - deleted) 00000000000000000000000000000000 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP793\A0044807.DLL Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application (unable to clean - deleted) 00000000000000000000000000000000 Hope that helps.

Hi,

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Viewpoint, it installs without your knowledge or consent, uses system resources and basically is not needed for anything.

Everything else looks fine , how are things running now??
Ken Every thing seems pretty much ok, still way slow to print, I will try and hunt that down. When I ran the HJT there was no viewpoint to remove, so I guess it is gone. It is still send/rec a bit, but in no way like it was, very far between. the Malwarebytes progam put the websearch in quarantine… should I remove it? Thank you so much.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
