Was getting ready to send a single e-mail out when Outlook outbox suddenly showed 27 messages waiting in queue to be sent. Also noticed once an offer to update to Norton Antivirus popped up on my screen but I was already running Trend Micro Internet Security.

Updated and ran, Ran SpyBot, Reloaded Ad-Aware and ran, Did on line Trend Micro scan, Did F-Secure on line scan — anything they found I removed. Not sure I really found anything important so downloaded and ran hijackthis and am submitting its log for your review
Thanks in Advance

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

2Small favor please.
Post all the logs instead of attaching them . It will be easier for me to view them again for reference later. Need to build a mental picture or your machine and my biological hard drive isn't what it used to be.
So looking back at a post will be easier.

HJT logs: Are to be done the very last thing after you have done what ever I have asked. This will show me certain things I need to see . So following instructions in order is always a plus.

Kasperskys found something infected in Outlook, small but maybe a reason:

Let's clear it.
. Look at you E-mail in Outlook and delete everything you don't need any more.
Starting with inbox sent box and then any other folder you may save mail in and then the deleted folder.

On the File menu, click Data File Management.
Highlight (the pst file in question here )
Click Settings….
Now click Compact Now.

Let it finish, do nothing else with outlook until it's done .

____________________________
To make sure we got it sometimes this next scan will narrow the email down for us if we need it.

2. Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.

_______________

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.

_____________________________________________
  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, a log will open. Please post the contents of log.txt
If by chance you close it . It can be found in c:/rsit/log.txt.

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log for me so NO reason to post one of those.

_________________________
In your next reply I would like to see:
  • The report from Bit defender
  • The report from RSIT
  • What else have you run to try and clar this up if anything.
  • Let me know at any point if there are any more instances of sending emails other than your own.
Sure appreciate your help

Sorry about the text files, did not understand –If you still want them posted in the log here I can do but believe you probably have already had to go to the trouble of reading.

Removed all e-mails in Outlook
Bit Defender did not appear to print very well so am including the file too

Have not been using machine for anything else untill we finish trouble shooting

Anything else you want let me know

Thanks again
Dennis

Good job on all those logs. I have to admit I think I will have the bit defender log file attached from here on in . That was easier on the eyes. Thanks for that. Well Bit defender did manage to find and delete the infected email. Exploit.Iframe.Vulnerability… Which could be a mass e mailer. Exactly the symptoms you described. Nothing else is showing up in your scans at the moment. I suggest we take a wait and see approach for a day or so and see if you notice any suspicious activity. This can either be in the form of E mail being sent out or anything else you may notice out of the ordinary. I know this was an anti climatic find but sometimes it's that simple. I am going to leave this topic open. So get back to me in 2-3 days and let me know if anything seems wrong.
Hello bob4, thanks again I ran Bit Defender again just to see what it might find. It finds a suspected virus in an e-mail, attempts to fix it, then attempts to delete it noting “file deleted” and finally ends up with the next line saying update failed. You will see its location is in the .pst extension. I have noted this other times when I ran Bit defender on this computer. As you probably remember I have removed all e-mails. You might also find the sender interesting, although my friend says he does communicate with him but not via the internet. Thought you might find some humor in this last some comment. It appears the e-mail file message is hidden some how. I will attempt to post the screen captures so you can see the notations. Sorry had to up load picture screen captures as files. Did not seem to be able to past in jpg or gif files. What do you think about this hidden e-mail? Thanks again Dennis
Lets try and compact that folder one more time then run bit defrender again.
The .pst file is a place where outlook stores emails.

Open Outlook
In the toolbar click File. It is probably the one furthest to the left.
In the list that opens up find Data File Management
Click the Data Files
Highlight outlook.pst
Now click Settings
Click the Compact Now button
The computer starts compacting. This can be very quick but it can also take some time. It is normal.
When it is done it will return to the prior window. Close it.

Now run bit defender 1 more time.
Hello bob4 Just removed Outlook.pst file and did a BitDefender scan – Got same message about .pst file. What do you think about that? Thanks agaion Dennis
Let me be clear here.
You DELETED this file from this location ? Please navigate to and double check the file in bold is gone.

C:\Documents and Settings\Don S\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\outlook.pst ?

If you can say it's not there than I can't explain why Bit Defender flags it.

Please post a new HJT log also.
Hi bob4

I don’t know what just happened –hit the preview button to look over my post and it disappeared so will redo it now.

I checked on the Outlook.pst file last night after removing it and BitDefender reported it as being there. Was not there and I checked this morning again ant it is not there. I even deleted the recycle bin last night and reran BitDefender still there.

Ran BitDefender again today and stopped it shortly after the message appeared. I will include a screen capture of the error message.

Then did an Hijackthis run

Sure is interesting — I don’t really understand how it could even be considered a false positive. What do you think?

Again thanks for assisting me

Dennis

Hello bob4 You have not replied back as promptly as you normally do. I am not trying to be pushy; are you just busy or did you give up as maybe this is unsolvable. Please advise me and again no mater which way, thanks again for all your help. Sincerely Dennis
Sorry about that. I didn't receive an email that you replied. Happens sometimes.
I never give up. Well almost never. Some things can't be explained sometimes.
Well I am going to ask some colleagues about this. But as long as the file really isn't there there's certainly nothing to worry about as far as it being infected. Bit Defender has always been a pretty good program. So I'm not sure what's up this time.

While checking for that file let's be sure you can see all hidden files and folders.
________________________________
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

____________________________________
Do an all files search for it exactly.

Search for outpost.pst
Now I want you to search for outpost.pst
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.

Paste this in the box
outlook.pst
Click search.

See if one shows up in that exact location. Let me know any locations that file may show up.

Let's get another online scan to be sure were clean.

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

I see no evidence of a fire wall. I suggest you get one in place now.

A few words on Microsofts firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.
To disable it.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firewalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!
Be patient and give it a few days to learn as you teach it what is and isn't allowed to access the internet.

Firewalls
Comodo If choosing this one be sure to UNCHECK install ask tool bar during installation,

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

Online armor Firewall
