Hi,

The video on my computer is very slow. When I open a folder, it overlays another folder for about 5 seconds.

Also, when I watch a video, many times it's choppy.

My computer has:

- ASUS A8V-VM SE Socket 939 Micro ATX Motherboard - UDMA133, SATA (RAID)
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0 Gb/s 320Gb hard drive (RAID array not set up)
- AMD Athlon Gforce 8400 64 X2 4200+ Toledo 2.2GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor (nVidia GeForce 8400 GS)
- ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler
- Corsair 620W PSU
- Ballistix 2x1G RAM, 184-pin DIMM, 128MX64 DDR PC3200, Unbuffered
- BenQ DW1655 Lightscribe DVD+RW 16X8X16 DVD-RW 16X4X16 CDRW 48X48X32
- VGA MSI NX8400GS-TD256EH 8400GS RT Video Card
- NORCO-4618 PCI-X / PCI eSATA / SATA II / SATA I Controller Card RAID 0/1/5/10/JBOD
- Windows XP Pro X64, SP2
- NetFramework 2.0 Redistributable Pack for X64

My video card is less than 2 years old.

dpi is set at 96, I think it's the default setting.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with it?

Hi Denise_M,

Good to see you back again, but sorry you are having Video Card problems......maybe

How long is it since you cleaned your dust bunnies and cleared your temporary internet cache?

What maintenance do you have ? namely Antimalware, Antispyware programs? Are all the definitions up to date?

Post back with the above information please and we will try to help.

kind regards, :)

Hi tallin, Yes, I'm back, like a bad habit, lol. I just checked and the interior of my tower is pretty clean. I cleaned the fan blades and grill on the heatsink. They were pretty dusty. I usually clean the grill for the system fan about once a month, because I'm always back there, plugging and unplugging things for my ext hdds and the dust is visible. I formatted my pc last week so the Windows files should still be in their original state. After the format and installing the mobo disk, I installed: Updated Drivers & Others: - Asus Bios Update v 7020 - ASUS PC Probe 2 v3.6 - ASUS Update V7.09.02 Install Program for Windows 64bit - AMD Dual-Core Optimizer - nVidia 175.19_geforce_winxp_whql (x64 edition display drivers) - Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver V5.10.0.5296 - Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R1.96 - SiI 3124_x64_1.1.13.0_logo (for SATA Controller Card) - SiI 3124 32-bit Windows BASE Controller Driver logo (for SATA Controller Card) - SiI 3124 64-bit Windows SATARAID5 Driver v1.5.11.0 - VIA Hyperion4in1456v - VIA HyperionPro v515a - VIA Hyperion Pro v 518a I checked and believe that these were the most up-to-date available. I installed a lot of programs and codecs for videos because that's what I do the most with my pc. I'm pretty much on top of pc maintenance and run some pc maintenance programs at least once every few days. I click on Tools > Internet Options > Delete, and delete the first 3. I run Disk Cleanup, Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal (cleans unnecessary Registry entries, junk files, spyware removal, system optimization, startup manage, and privacy sweep), and I defrag my C drive. I also run Dial-a-Fix that clears DNS and purges SFC. I think that's about it. For malware, I have Avast and I run Ad-Aware and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition about twice a week. I get automatic updates from Microsoft and before I run Ad-Aware and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, I check for updates. I'm on my pc a lot, most of my waking time and I have it doing other things when I'm sleeping. It's not turned off much, except to reboot.

Hi Denise_M, I have to commend you on your clear and concise posts. You are surely up to date with looking after your computer's needs to keep it ship shape and fast running. I wonder if your Video Card is not seated properly, I doubt that, but do take a look. With your experience I do not have to advise you how.....other than that, I am running out of suggestions for you. One of the other volunteers may drop by to assist with a different track for you to follow. kind regards,

Hi tallin, I'll unseat and reseat the video card, just to make sure that it's seated properly, thanks for the suggestion. If the problem continues, could the worst case scenario be that the video card is going bad? All of my programs open and work fine, the audio is good too. I'm having a problem with copying/moving files but I'm saving that for another topic unless there's a possibility that the two are linked, which I don't think.

Hi Denise_M, Let us hope the Video Card is not faulty. Have you another computer you could pillage and try a different card just to prove a point? You can expand here regarding your other topic if you like.......let's kill two birds with the one stone? Best regards,

I don't have another computer to use to test the video card. I'm having with copying/moving files. They'll copy/move eventually but it takes a long time, only if I have two or more going at the same time. I have a lot of ext hdds, some USB 2.0, some firewire, some SATA I and some SATA II. My int hdd is SATA I. When I decide to organize the files in the ext hdds in a different manner, I move some files from one ext hdd and some to another. If I move one of the groups to an ext hdd, they move at a good speed. It could finish in about 1/2 hour. If I decide to try to move both categories at the same time, some to one ext hdd and some to another, the transfer rate is extremely slow. It takes much longer, about 3 hours. There are times that the copying/moving stops and my pc freezes. One time, when I tried to start a third transfer, my pc froze within 15 minutes with only a couple of files copied/moved to the destination drives. If I try to change the name of a file on a drive that isn't involved with the copy/move, my pc will either freeze or it takes about 15 seconds between the time that I right click on the file name and the time that I can change the name. After I type in a new file name, it takes about 5 to 10 seconds before it actually changes. When I'm not copying/moving files, it's almost immediate. My last computer was a 5 year old PATA with two 128M sticks of RAM and a single core processor, but it outperformed this computer when moving/copying files to ext hdds. I performed a Drive Speed Test and it shows the rate that my files can copy. I don't know if the speeds in the resultant report are good because I don't have a baseline to compare them and I haven't yet looked on the internet for one, but Copying" doesn't look good. I also ran a HD Tune Benchmark Test but, again, I can't read the results yet. In the Health Test, Spin Retry Count was highlighted in the report.

Here is a link to test your Video Card

If that is not successful, try the other links here

Denise, re your transfer problem, at first glance you are really testing the processor trying to do so much at the same time, but further research and knowledge is needed for me to reply correctly.

Others are invited to give their opinions on both your queries.

kind regards for the present,

Note: I just did a test here on this PC and it is running at 34C and my Laptop at 37C.....Yours is running at 41C which is a bit high to me, but I will research on to see if I can find more information.

I just finished cleaning the interior of the tower and unseated and reseated the Graphics Card. I also gave the Controller Card and Firewire card a firmer push. They are all seated properly now so that can be ruled out as a reason for the problems that I'm having with my graphics. The choppy graphics and the folder overlay won't happen again until my computer's been on for about 12 hours. The problems with the slow copying/moving, file/folder name change and freezing happen as soon as I boot up. The graphics overlay starts after approximately 12 to 18 hours after I boot up.

So it is a heat problem I think at this present time........ with the graphics card.....more research taking place. I think the slow transfer is CPU overload, but again more research is needed by me and others who come by to offer assistance if they can. best regards,

I had my computer turned off all night and started the tests when I booted up this morning. I don't think the results look good. According to the The nVidia Graphics Card Benchmark Test, the nVidia GeForce 8400 GS should have a rating of 41. My rating is 24. Using the Drive Speed Test, The File Copy Speed dropped .235 from yesterday's report, so that files will copy a fraction faster when my computer has just booted up. The 3D Mark Test didn't have enough test results in order to compare it to my test results. The nVidia Cards Benchmark Test shows that the nVidia GeForce 8400 GS Card should have a speed between 27 and 69. My test result shows a speed of 24. The HD Tune Test showed a starting temperature of 29ºC. Within 5 minutes, it went up to 31ºC. Right now, after being on for about an hour, the tempurature is 35ºC.

I'm not one of the Tech Team members, but find issues like this interesting. 1. Did you install any extra cooling fans to the case? My box isn't anything like yours but I use to have a heating issue until I added 3 extra internal fans attached to the case. 2. Are you using the system board USB Ports or from an add-on card? If you are running XP without the service packs, a USB2.0 port can act lke a USB 1.0 as there is a Microsoft USB 2.0 driver that is needed in order for USB 2.0 to be implemented. 3. When you're playing Videos are you running them from an external device? If so, if you run one from your local HD are they choppy as well?

LDTate, Thanks for your interest. I installed a system fan in the rear of the case that blows in cool air. Right now, the temp is 37ºC, which is ok. I think cleaning the dust for the grill was what it needed. I have 4 USB ports on my computer. One of them is for my printer and the another is for my speaker system. I use the other two for HUBS and each HUB has another HUB daisy-chained from it. I have SP2. My videos are all on ext hdds but there isn't a difference between the video choppiness (is that a word ? lol) on any of them. I've tried new cables and switching HUBs and ports but it didn't make a difference.

The temp is still 37ºC. I've been doing a lot of video converting today and moving and copying files. My computer's been on since yesterday and, at this point, the graphics are getting poor, with internet pages opening very slowly and folders overlaying one another for a few seconds. Changing the name of files is becoming difficult. There were times that I needed to use Unlocker. Also, copying and moving files has slowed down, and I won't try to copy or move two files at a time until I reboot. Rebooting does a lot in making my computer run well. What does a reboot do that it can do that?
