Hi guys, first off i wanna say thx for all that you do, I very much appreciative for the time you take out to help people like me. OK so computer was fine yesterday morning, went to school came back later in evening and when i turned it on it loaded welcome screen as usual then went black. I could see the cursor and move it still, but nothing else on screen. I have googled the "black screen with cursor" and have read many post similar but then their problems branch out a different way. I have just let it sit with black screen because the pc activity lite stays blinking like its doing something and about after 20 minutes it finally loads to desktop and everything is fine. All programs work Internet is fine no errors. I have also tried cntrl+alt+delete on black screen which brings up task manager and I ended the process explorer.exe (as 1 forum suggested for my topic) then clicked new task to restart it. When i do that the black screen disappears and i can see the desktop. But everything is not quite frozen but you cant open anything. I can right click and bring up the little menus but if i try to open or click anything on menu it is unresponsive. However after i wait the 20-25 minutes everything i tried to click all starts coming up quickly. I have run some seagate seatools as i read on another post everything checked out good. Also if i restart PC in safe mode with or without networking it starts just fine. No problems at all. here is my hijack this log, if anyone could please help i would be forever grateful. I just wanna be able to come home and use pc without these problems lol :pullhair: If it matters my younger brother also uses the pc for games and such he used it while i was at school the only thing he said he did was a patch for world of warcraft as well and played WoW as usual. :smack: I assume i could just leave the pc on and dont restart but this is incredibly annoying knowing something is wrong and i dont know what it is :( Thank you again.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Lets see if we can restore the pc back to where it worked right.

Close and save any documents that you may have open.

Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.

When the Start Menu opens click on the All Programs menu option.

Click once on the Accessories Start Menu group.

Click once on the System Tools Start Menu group.

Click once on the System Restore icon. After you click on the icon, if a User Account Control window opens you should click on the Continue button.

You will now be at the System Restore screen as shown below in Figure 1. From this screen you can specify the restore point that you would like to restore.

By default, Vista will already have selected the Recommended restore option. This restore point is one was made after a new program, driver, or update was installed. If you would like to use this restore point, you can click on the Next button to start the restore process. On the other hand, if there is a more recent restore point that you would like to restore you should select Choose a different restore point and press the Next button. This will bring you to a screen, as shown in Figure 2, that contains a listing of all the available restore points that you can restore to.

You should select the restore point that you would like to restore and press the Next button to start the restore process. Vista will display a Window showing your selected restore point and asking you to confirm that this is the one you would like to restore.

If you would like to select a different restore point press the Back button. Otherwise you can press the Cancel button to exit System Restore or the Finish button to begin the restore process. If you selected Finish, Vista will display a second prompt asking you to confirm that you would like to continue the restore.

If you are sure you want to do the restore, then press the Yes button. Vista will now log you off of the computer and start the System Restore process as shown in Figure 5 below.

When the restore has been completed, you computer will be restarted and when Vista boots back up it will be restored to its previous state. When you log in to Vista for the first time after the restore, you will see a message showing that the restore was successful.

If there are any problems with your computer due to the last restore, you can revert back to your previous settings by going back into the System Restore Utility and selecting the Undo System Restore option and pressing the Next button.

Your computer should now be working properly again.
Hello and thanks, I tried what you said, went to system restore and picked a restore date prior, i restarted and same problem, only this time i did notice the internet starts disconnected too on the little icon by the time, until about 20 minutes then everything seems to come to life. :smack:
Well lets have a look and see if we find anything.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe, select "Run as administrator" and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

1. This tool MUST be run from the executable. (.exe), each time you run it.
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

Make sure you are disconnected from the net

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Ok i did exactly what u said twice lol, just to make sure i did it right, both times not touching the mouse once i ran combo as admin. I shut off antivirus and unplugged Ethernet from PC. When i start up combo i right click and choose "run as administrator" it opes up then shows a blue screen that says "A duplicate file name exists or the file cannot be found. Please wait combofix is preparing to run-" i left it for 2 hours and nothing except the little "-" kept blinking. Do i leave it on longer? thank you.

No it shouldn't do that.

How's it running?
📎combosnip.JPGI downloaded it from the link you provided to my desktop, i shut down Trend micro AV, and unplugged Internet, then right-clicked the combo program and "run as administrator" . It opens to the screen of the image i provided and stays there :( i have left it alone for 2 hours and just stays like that. :(
I suggest we remove it and download it again.
It shouldn't take anymore then 20-30 minutes.

We could try this first:

  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

* Reconnect to the internet

* Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.

If that doesn't work:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
