My computer boots up mostly normal; there is, however, a black screen after the COMPAQ screen that stays up for a long time with just a blinking cursor. Then the Windows XP screen comes up. Once I enter my user password, it shows my desktop background photo and nothing else. There is no taskbar. No start menu. The Start button on my keyboard doesn't work. CTRL-ESC doesn't work. I can CTRL-ALT-DEL and run programs through Task Manager, but no programs are running. The Windows Explorer program seems to be missing or something. I have done multiple virus and spyware scans, as I have an anti-virus and spyware program; neither found any problems.

Is it possible I deleted a necessary file or something? How can I get this thing back up and running without formatting and re-installing everything?

Has anyone encountered this problem before? I tried the shellfix.reg file and it didn't help. I tried System File Check–no dice. I ran in Safe Mode and still everything was missing and I had to use Task Manager.

Can someone help? I included my HijackThis log just in case someone wanted to see it. I know this isn't the proper forum for that; I just want someone's informed opinion on my problem.

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the forum . Please stay in this thread only and do not start a new topic . You have posted on the 17th and the 18th and both logs are different. You do have some major malware on your system.

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall anything that has to do with Viewpoint

Not always but sometimes removing NewDotNet will disrupt your internet access, so download this tool first to your desktop, only use it in the event you lose internet access after removing NewDotNet
Winsockxpfix

Please open your Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet from there if listed. If it is not listed, follow these instructions:
  • From a computer that has Internet access, click on the following link:
    Uninstall .
  • Download and save uninstall6_90.exe to the Desktop.
  • Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
  • Click on the OK button.
  • After removal, you may be prompted to reboot. Please reboot even if not prompted.

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply

I need to see the Smitfraud log and a New HJT log please
Thanks for the kind assistance.

I removed all Viewpoint files and folders.

I didn't have any New.Net files, but I had deleted some last week or so, after I'd read nothing but bad news about them on various forums such as this one. I tried to download and use the EXE file you linked me to, but my computer saved the file, but when I opened it through Task Manager, it did nothing. Windows asked me if I should RUN the file, and I said OK, but then nothing happened. I also downloaded the ZIP file. Windows said it "couldn't find the file" when I tried opening it–it was not a typing error as I opened it with Task Manager. So, I'm at a loss. I ran an updated HJT and have posted the log below.

Thanks for all your help.

One more thing I noticed, is that EXPLORER.exe has finally appeared in the HJT log. It has also appeared in the Task Manager PROCESSES tab, which it hadn't before. But when I tried to RUN Explorer, the taskbar popped up for about a half-second before disappearing again. But the processes tab continued to tell me Explorer was running. I'm going to try to reboot it again–you can assume if I do not respond in a few minutes that the problem is still persisting. Thanks.
Ok. Rebooted and EXPLORER is not running anymore according to the Task Manager or another HJT log, just minutes later. Weird.

What exe file are you talking about Newdotnet or Smitfraud.?? You have to understand that you had or still have parts or all of some nasty infections and they play havoc on your system, sometimes , not always they do leave some permanent damage. I don't know exactly what you have done but between your first posting and then in this thread I am looking at Smitfraud, NewDotNet and Revelent Knowledge, its a wonder your system even starts up at all.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Tutorial for CCleaner

I still need to see the Smitfraud log.
Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a New HJT log

I need to see the Smitfraud log and a New HJT log please
ken545:

I fixed the problems in HJT that you pointed out. No problems there.

I booted into Safe Mode but could not find the file rkupginstaller.exe to delete in the windows\system32 folder. I believe it is because I cannot see the file. I could not enable Windows to show all files and folders because my Start Menu, taskbar, and desktop icons are missing. I operate everything from the RUN menu in Task Manager. I tried "control" for Control Panel and "control folders" commands, but none worked. It seems some programs just won't work.

Per your earlier reply where you said to download a newdotnet uninstaller, I downloaded it, but nothing happened when I clicked RUN. I also downloaded the Smitfraudfix ZIP file but I couldn't get it to open, either. Couldn't get it to unzip to another folder for that matter.

Is there a way to make Windows show all my folders without fooling with the taskbar or control panel? Or a program that finds the hidden rkupginstaller.exe file and deletes it? I don't know what the problem with the Smitfraudfix.zip file. I've posted another HJT log (my apologies for shooting so much stuff toward you)–I can't post the smitfraudfix until I get it to open.

Many many thanks.

bigbluejackson

It sounds like with the amount of malware you had on this system that it may have caused some damage , don't know why the zip file won't open. You can try downloading the free trial of winzip and see if they will unzip with that program.
Winzip

Try this fix also.
Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system you may or may not need your Windows XP CD.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop.
Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rkupginstaller.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

Then try removing the download of smitfraud from your desktop and do a fresh download and try it again with Wizip.
Ran CCleaner: cleaned and issues scanned. Fixed all checked and backed up registry.

Downloaded WinZip and opened Smitfraudfix. I've included the log below.

Downloaded PocketKillBox and deleted rkupginstaller.exe on boot. Nothing came up on reboot saying anything had been deleted; I am assuming the program is effective.

Still can't get the Uninstall6_90.exe file to open, though.

I've included another HJT log, too.

The computer seems to be running better (the bootup time is faster), but the taskbar and start menu are still gone.

Ran SFC /scannow and it never prompted me to use a CD, so I didn't. It ran the file verification and finished. Apparently it didn't find anything, because no dialog box popped up after.

Thanks again for all your help and continued help. I really appreciate it.

Smitfraud did not find anything and the rest of your log looks fine. What I would do is run this free online scanner from Panda, it will give you an extensive log, it will remove a virus but not malware , what I need to see is the log so we can determine if there is anything left lurking on your system. Plan on having a cup of coffee or the beverage of your choice because this can take awhile :P

Run these through Killbox , this time have it set for All Files.

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\loud.exe
C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\angelex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\exul.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure All Files is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

Even though your log looks fine, one of those files we removed was related to a Purity infection, lets run this quick scan and see what it comes up with, if all is ok at that point I have some free programs for you to install to help keep you more secure.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Let me see the Combofix log and hopefully the last HJT log .
Thanks again for all the help . . .

Your log is looking good  But again run this file thru Killbox as a Single File.

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\unvise32.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

There is a new version of Java available, you need to upgrade to version 6.1 Go to your Control Panel and make sure your in Classic View, open the Java Folder and then to the Update tab and click on Updates and it will download the latest version for you. Then you can remove version 5.11 from your Add Remove programs list.

How are things running now??
The machine runs better than it did before, but Windows Explorer still won't run. So there is still no taskbar, no Start menu, no right-click menu, no desltop icons. I can't access Control Panel either. When I type "explorer" or "explorer.exe" the taskbar becomes visible for a split second, then disappears. Same with when I try to run "control." I also noticed that Explorer.exe is not running in the Task Manager proceesses tab. So this seems to be the part of the problem that's toughest to solve? Have you ever encountered anything like this? I even tried replacing the explorer.exe file with a different one from the same version of Windows; this didn't work, either. You've been an invaluable service the past few days–I just hope we can lick this thing. Thanks. -Bigbluejackson
