Hello all,
My machine is infected with spyware that I can not remove. I run SAV10 antivirus but it does not detect anything. There is a caution triangle in my system tray that is giving me gloom and doom messages about being infected with spyware. My internet explorer is taking me to places I did not attempt to go to and my back ground has changed to:

Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC.
________________________________________

Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.

It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities.
Antispyware software helps protect your PC against spyware and other security threats.

Hello spookysdad, and welcome to What the Tech! My name is BHowett and I will be helping you to get sorted. If for any reason you do not understand any of the instructions, or are just unsure then please do not guess , simply post back with your question, and we will go through it again.

Sorry for the delay, as you can tell we get quite busy sometimes. Please do the following….

CCleaner

CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. If you do not want the toolbar, just uncheck the box.

Download & Run CCleaner
  • Note: This will remove all files stored in temporary folders, and will delete your internet history and cookies
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetup140_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner
  • Click OK
  • Click Next>
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next>
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
  • There should now be a CCleaner shotrcut on your desktop, double click on it to start CCleaner
  • Click analyse
  • Click Run Cleaner
  • Click OK
  • Wait for CCleaner to finish, and then close CCleaner

===============================================

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Also let me know how things are running now
BHowett,

Thank you. These instructions seem to have worked well. I am attaching the HijackThis log and the Malwarebytes log.

Please let me know if there is anything left over and thanks again for the help.

Hi spookysdad,

Looks like that cleaned out a lot, please do the following…

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [isamonitor.exe] C:\Program Files\iMediaCodec\isamonitor.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

iMediaCodec

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\iMediaCodec
