This malware or adware, Spyware Protect 2009, showed up on our computer yesterday after being on the net. I have tried to remove it using Spyware Doctor from PCTools and have had no luck. I also had a freind try to reset my system back several weeks before the this showed up and that did not work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I am a novice and was told about your site by a friend so please be patient with my technical shortcomings.

Here is the Hijackthis logfile.

More details if I was not specific enough. This program has pop-ups that continuously appear indicating that the programs I am running and the websites I am visiting are infected with viruses and the pop-ups are directing me to their websiti to download the full version of Spyware Protect 2009. I have been unable to remove this program to date using Spyware Doctor. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi tjdwyer, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks

Hi oldman960, Thanks for the info. I've printed your instructions and will follow explicitly. Can't do this until later tonight. I'll post back with the logs you requested and the computers condition. May not be until late this evening. I appreciate your time and effort.
oldman960, thanks for the patience. I will be trying your suggested fix tomorrow or thursday. please stay tuned. just back in town this evening. thanks again and I'll post back in the next day or two. tjdwyer
oldman960,

I have completed your instructions and, prior to this, the Spyware Protect 2009 infection had placed an icon in my task bar and I could not remove it. After your procedures and a restart of my computer the icon is gone?! Thus far I have not seen the pop-ups.

I await your reply.

Thank you again for your patience and assistance.

Here are the logs you requested: (one mistake on my part, I ran hijack this again after everything was done and accidentally saved the log over the first one you requested. I hope this does not hinder you ability to determine if the problem has been resolved.)

Hi tjdwyer,

I ran hijack this again after everything was done and

Perfect, HJT should be the last scan taken.

Next, let's look deeper. Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.

Next, Download OTViewIt to your desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTViewIt
  • Place a tick in the Scan all Users box
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • On completion it will produce two logs on the Desktop, atttach the OTViewIt.txt and Extras.txt logs in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Please post back with the Rooter log and the OTViewIt logs. No need for a HJT log this time.

Thanks
Hi tjdwyer,

Close explorer.

Open HJT
  • click on the Config button
  • click on the Misc Tools button
  • click on the ADS Spy button
  • When the next window appears, click the Scan button
  • After the tool fininshed, pleaes locate and checkmark this line
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:DFC5A2B2
  • click on the Remove selected button
Close HJT

Your java is out of date, Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
The current version is Java6 Update 11
Note Java6 Update12 may be offered. It is the same except it has support for 64 bit browsers. Either one will be ok)

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log. Please let us know how the computer is.

Thanks
