Hi,

I had a spambot attack that originated from my laptop recently. Outlook 2007 was using my default SMTP to send out spam emails to totally unknown people. I tried to find online resources on how to check whether the computer has been turned into a Spam Bot or Zombie, but could not find useful leads.

As an attempt to clean up the system, I switched from Windows Vista's default firewall to Zone Alarm and changed my anti-virus from Norton 360 to AVG. In addition, I scanned and cleaned the system with multiple tools like SpyBot, F-Secure, and AdAware. I also deleted all the Outlook data files and created one new profile.

After all this, I still am not sure if there is a way to tell whether the laptop is really clean. Can someone please help? I am posting HijackThis log for review for any suspicious activity?

Thanks in advance.

Hi nadodi,

It sounds like you did some good things to clean up the computer, however it is the nature of modern malware that once a machine has been seriously infected, there is no way to be 100% sure it's clean without reformatting - if an absolute assurance is required then that is what you will need to do.

We can however have a close look at your machine and afterwards be quite confident that your machine is clean. If this is satisfactory, please do as follows:

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All… and follow the prompts)
  • Disconnect from the internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad (Click Start->Run, type notepad and Enter) and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop

————————————————————————

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply
————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the GMER log and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.
Thanks much Silver.

Sorry about posting the log with word wrap on.

Hi nadodi,

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender
————————————————————————

Please open Start->Control Panel->Uninstall a program/Programs and Features, and remove JavaT 6 Update 6.
This is out of date and now a security risk, you already have a newer update (Java 6 Update 10 (RC)) don't remove this one.
If you need a current stable release, please download Version 6 Update 7 from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start, type notepad into the search box and press Enter
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
sc stop DSPCNYEQ >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete DSPCNYEQ >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop JSRSHVXUE >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete JSRSHVXUE >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop VCKIZFIOEU >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete VCKIZFIOEU >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop RNKUV >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete RNKUV >> results.txt 2>>&1

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop, right-click it and choose Run as administrator
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

Scan with ESET online scanner:
  • Open Internet Explorer by right-clicking the IE icon (on the Start menu or quick launch) and selecting Run as administrator
  • NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:

    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"

  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
  • Please be sure to close this Internet Explorer window before continuing.
————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the Eset scan report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your machine is running at present.

Are there any indications of suspicious activity in my previous logs?

No, we've had a close look and not found anything suspicious so just some tidying up left to do.

It looks like the runme.bat may have been double-clicked instead of right-clicked and Run as administrator. Is this what happened? If so, please repeat the instructions and take care to execute the file in the manner described:

Open Notepad: press Start, type notepad into the search box and press Enter
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
sc stop DSPCNYEQ >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc delete DSPCNYEQ >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc stop JSRSHVXUE >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc delete JSRSHVXUE >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc stop VCKIZFIOEU >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc delete VCKIZFIOEU >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc stop RNKUV >> results2.txt 2>>&1
sc delete RNKUV >> results2.txt 2>>&1
del %0
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop, right-click it and choose Run as administrator
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results2.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

Once complete, please post the results2.txt output and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks Silver. Yes, the runme.bat was double-clicked instead of run as administrator. News results2.txt and hijack this log pasted below for review.

Hi nadodi,

That looks good, some important final steps:

Please now delete rsit.exe, gmer.exe and any remaining logs from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\rsit

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start, then right-click Computer, select Properties then click System Protection
  • Next to You can create a Restore Point right now… click Create…
  • Type a name for the Restore Point like All Clean and press OK
  • Once the Restore Point has been created, press OK, OK and close the System dialog box.

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start, type cleanmgr in the search box and press Enter
  • Select Files from all users on this computer
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and confirm by pressing Delete
  • Then press OK and Delete Files to confirm

Re-enable Windows Defender real-time protection:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, check Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

If the above went well I think your machine is clean of malware :). If you are still experiencing problems with sleep mode, I think it is not malware-related so I recommend you try posting in the Microsoft Windows forum here at WTT. Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
