Hi,

I started the quest this evening to try and find out what Rundll32 is and why it's trying to connect to a DNS server.

I have been around and around the web and ended my journey here (I hope it stays that way). Could anyone explain what I should do to the following to help my situation.

MANY THANKS

John.
johnnyfive007,

Information on rundll.exe can be found here.

I'm not really seeing anything bad in your log. What kind of symptoms are you having?

I suggest you do this:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Tomk, I'm glad I have you helping asd I have been reading other threads and have found yours to be extremly detailed and helpful. Anyway (butt kissing over), my computer is running extremly slow. The internet connection/download speed is pitiful. I have had my ISP out to check all my connections and they assure me it must be doan to my computer. I have completed the ATF cleaner and I am running the mbam-setup.exe download as I write this and will post all results once complete. Can I say, I use CCleaner and find this gives excellent results (not sure if you've tried it). John
johnnyfive007, CCleaner is an excellent tool. I also use it. ATF is quite similiar. Frankly, CCleaner has the ability to totally screw up your registry if you don't know what you are doing so we typically recommend ATF as a safer option for an unknown user. Some helpers do use CCleaner. I don't believe that running either of them is going to improve your situation, it just cleans up some extraneous files from some areas of your computer. The plan here is to speed up some of the scans we might be doing later.
Ok, here we go!

Please either print out these instructions for reference or copy/paste them in notepad and save to your desktop for access when in safe mode

Make all files and folders visible
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

NORTON ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following file, and DELETE it (if still present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ALCMTR.EXE <–This file

Restart your computer normally.

Now let's run an online scan to see if we are missing anything. This will take a couple of hours to run.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Tomk, I am currently trying to do the online Kaspersky test but on checking my computer configuration it states I need Java operating system version 1.5 or above. I am running version 6? HELP!
johnnyfive007,

Yep. You have version 6 with update 7. Don't know why it's not working.

Lets run a different one then.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
