[Resolved] a dozen trojans

I don't know quite how, but I ended up with a nasty set of trojans on my main desktop.
I am usually pretty good about conquering beasts like this when they come one at a time.
But this cocktail of hijackers, etc is making browsing impossible and every attempt to scan is thwarted by a new issue.
I think I am doing the tasks I am doing in the wrong order . . .
So I will post a hijack this log here from my laptop in hopes someone can suggest a reasonable order in which to go about removing these viruses.
Thanks.
Bitdefender found at least 8 that it couldn't take action on including:
adware.xpantivirus.aj
application.cleansystemrestore.a
rootkit-hidden items
and
trojans
fake.av.am
fakealert.abb
fakealert.acr
patched.u
peed.gen

there are also lots of corrupt system32 files

Here's a hijackthis log:

Hello Siiic812 and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

B. Now, we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

Please disable BitDefender temporarily as it may interfere with the fixes. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean. Remember to re-enable it back before posting the logs.

* Right click on BitDefender icon near the clock and select Open advanced settings.
* On the left, click on Antivirus.
* Uncheck (untick) the Real-time protection is enabled box.
* You will be prompted. Select 30 minutes for the duration.
* Click OK.
* Right click on its icon near the clock again and click on Exit.

C. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix won't run in either normal or safe mode . . . It acts like it is going to open– shows a small box loading that says "comboFix" Then I see the hourglass for a few seconds and it stops.
Try renaming the combofix.exe file to trev.exe and double click on the newly renamed file. Do nut use the copy/paste script in the run box. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Before we move on, we will try something else just to make sure.

1. Please delete ComboFix from your desktop

2. Download a fresh copy from the above links and attempt to run the new copy. Make sure Bit Defender Guard is turned off during the download as it may be removing or altering a file in ComboFix.
Bitdefender off. I downloaded from the other link. It runs on the laptop, but not the infected desktop pc. Ran Malwarebytes and now combofix is running! log coming soon.
Please note that the following scan will take about 1 hour to run.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
  • Please visit the Kaspersky Online Scanner website.
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Change the "Files of Type" dropdown box to "Text Files"
  • Enter a memorable filename.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Online scanners won't work for me since I can't browse the internet at all on the infected computer. I will have the combofix and fresh hijackthis log soon.

A. According to the results from the ComboFix run, it appears Identity Theft

Your system has been infected by one or more Backdoor Trojans or Trojan Password Stealers.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities. I must remind you that i cannot guarantee that your computer will be completely clean afterwards since we have no way of knowing what has been done to it.

To help you make your decision, here are a few related articles that i suggest you read:

  • Danger: Remote Access Trojans.
  • When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
  • How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and Credit Card Fraud?

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

If you decide to continue with the cleanup, here is the next step:

B. First we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

Please make sure that BitDefender is disabled again.

D. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
I've decided to wipe it clean . . . but can't even win at that. Despite the fact that I have 2 hard drives, (both functional and recognized by bios) when I boot from the xp cd it doesn't fnd any!
