Hello
I have tried to fix this problem by scanning and removing files using ad-aware and the free version of PC Tools Spyware Doctor. I have eTrust antivirus installed too, but everytime I reboot the pesky thing reinstalls itself! It is making the laptop almost unusable now as IE browsers are opening without menu bars, pop-up windows telling me to download spyware killers are a big annoyance and the latop is just slowing down in general. A dialogue box sometimes appears on boot up saying that I haven't used the correct bootfile and then I get a blue screen of death and have to restart by holding the power button in.
I tried to follow some instructions for manual removal of the trojan and i did delete some files from the registry, but they just came back with a new name so I don't think I did anything too drastic *fingers crossed*.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Suzy

Welcome suzyuk

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Please Note: My instructions to you are checked by an expert prior to posting. This may cause a small delay between posts.
Thanks
John

WhattheTech P2P Policy
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Red Swoosh

I'd like you to read the WhattheTech policy for P2P Programs.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button
  • In Platform box choose Windows
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java™ 6 Update 3
    Java™ 6 Update 5
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions
  • Reboot your computer

ComboFix
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
How To Use Combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix
A guide to do this can be found here.
The ones that need to be closed/disabled are:
eTrust AV | AdAware | Spyware Doctor

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you
Include the following reports for further review so we may continue cleaning the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Good morning!

I managed to follow all the instructions and here are my logs:

The popcap thing was me! My friend told me you could play scrabble there so I went - but I never figured out how to get on properly -I thought it was an online thing and never imagined it had downloaded something to the pc. What an idiot I am!!!

Thanks for your continuing support!

Hi suzyuk
Your logs look good. Any problems?

Delete Files & Folders
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following file: if found, delete it:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll

Remove Combofix
Click on Start > Run. Copy and paste in ComboFix /u & click OK. Use the image below for reference.

Hi Sorry I've been a while replying - I've been away from home for a couple of days without the laptop. My boyfriend says it's been working OK - but he did have a blue screen of death on startup yesterday, he rebooted and it was fine then. The popcap dll wasn't in the folder. When I tried to run ComboFix /u I got this dialogue box: C:\327882R2FWJFW\pv.cfexe is not a valid Win32 application I have tried to run this command twice with the same result. Thanks for your continued support! Suzy
Hi suzyuk Temporarily disable your anti-virus & spyware protection (eTrust AV | AdAware | Spyware Doctor) then try removing Combofix using the method recommended. Then post a final HJT log for review.
