insanity
OK, after a few more hours of checking, I was about ready to 
when for some reason I checked my mouse software control panel for the upteenth time and hit the advanced tab under properties. Low and behold there was the problem. The wireless keyboard and mouse software was set to update automatically…including to automatically install the updates. 
I am using the keyboard, but not the mouse, so when it installed automatically installed the update I ended up with two sets of drivers confusing the hail out of each other. I disabled the wireless drivers and rebooted. So far so good. 
I have a few choice thoughts about the factory defaults, but I'll let them stay in my mind.
