I think I'm going to reformat and reinstall. Is there much point in scanning further and updating further? Once you reformat and reinstall, does it completely wipe everything and you can be sure it's all safe?

You need to make sure you have your Windows install CD.
Info here looks pretty good:

Thanks for the links. I'm letting my scanner finish for now. My CD is an "Operating System" CD and says "this cd is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers" and also says "the software is already installed on your computer. Only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer." Is this CD going to be ok to use in the reformatting and reinstallation process?

Yes.
"I normally use Firefox. Do settings in Internet Explorer or in Internet Options affect Firefox? Even if I dont use Internet Explorer, should I set these settings? The settings are different but you need to make those changes to IE."

Are there settings I should set in Firefox to optimise security?

You mentioned data files for the mostpart are safe. If i was to save internet bookmarks, are they data files and safe?

Also, this may be a bit much, but do you know how to save bookmarks from firefox?
Cool. Thanks for all your help. I am going to bed (it's late here). I'll back up and reformat and reinstall tomorrow provided I have enough space on a hard drive to back up on to.
