Greetings! I have found the source of the infection in the computer that I posted about below

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Hupigon_back…er_t105520.html

It is in my friend's current computer. We're wanting to move all his files to the new computer- haven't moved any yet because the old computer needs cleaning up. Apparently hupigon rode from one computer to the other on my flash drive. :smack: (Malwarebytes was able to clear hupigon from the flash drive.)This computer is also a Sony Vaio but has Win XP SP3. It had SuperAntiSpyware which apparently did not get it clean or keep it clean.

I have cleaned up a lot on this computer by using ATF cleaner and Malwarebytes. I ran a Kaspersky scan and found underlying infections. I am including my logs and would appreciate your reviewing them. Thank you for your help. Jcatsmom

Jcatsmom,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Tomk- Thanks for your prompt reply. -Jcatsmom

Jcatsmom,

That should have cleared up a few things.

You've got some "magic" programs running that I don't recommend. I believe they put you at risk to do more harm than good so I suggest that you uninstall them. They are RegCure and XoftSpySE. These programs are not "evil" but I think you are better off without them. It's your choice but if you don't have a good reason for keeping them, you can get rid of them by uninstalling in Add or Remove programs in your control panel.

Then please let me have one more HijackThis log and tell me how your computer seems to be running now.
Tomk- The machine is running much better, although a little slow on the start up. Part of that could be Super Anti Spyware loading. I'm thinking of running eusing free registry cleaner and start-up lite. I'm including a new HJT scan. there's one item that I highlighted that I wondered about. You had me remove O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE Are they related?

When you feel that the machine is clean, my next step is to clone the HD to a new HD that isn't so doggone noisy.

You help and availability have really been appreciated. -Jcatsmom

Jcatsmom,

Yep. They are related. They have to do with Realtek AC97 Audio. The one I had you "fix" wasn't removed, we just made it not run at startup. It's not a "bad" file, it potentially can be used to gather information about you. Not a big risk, but also not needed so we turned it off. :)

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTM to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tomk- I followed the procedures removing combofix and cleaning up OTM. One last question. The other hard drive had gotten infected with hupignon via my flash drive. Malwarebytes seemed to clean it up (at least the easy to get at stuff. I intend to reformat the drive for future use. Will that clean out any possible remants or do I need to do clean-up on it? I used malwarebytes to cleanup the flash drive and changed it's autorun that was a problem. Should it be okay now? Thank you so much for your help it has been greatly appreciated. -Jcatsmom :woot:
Jcatsmom,

If you reformat the drive, it will start clean.

I suggest that you run Flash Disenfector on that thumb drive.

Please download Flash Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the
utility to clean up those drives as well. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that is plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.
Thanks, Tomk! An interesting wrinkle- TrendMicro 2007, the antivirus program on my own computer wouldn't let me download Flash Disinfector- even when I put it in the trusted zone. It did download on the other computer that's running Super AntiSpyware. -Jcatsmom
Jcatsmom, That is interesting. I hadn't heard of that before. Go ahead and run it on the one that will let you. Good Luck and Be Well.
