Hello. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!

I am running Windows XP Pro, generally use Firefox and once in a blue moon use Internet Explorer.

Today I ran a scan with Kaspersky Internet Security and it detected Hupigon.dckd. Interestingly it was detected in an old HJT folder and then the folder in which that HJT folder was kept.

I also ran spynomore which detected Vundo Trojan.

I removed Vundo Trojan and Kaspersky dissinfected what it found.

I switched the computer off and on again and did another scan with both Kaspersky and Spynomore. Spynomore is not detecting anything and Kaspersky found Hupigon in c:\system volume information\_restore (followed by a long line of numbers in brackets) .exe//UPX.

I went through the Kaspersky delete process and then repeated the process, switching the computer off, then on again and did a scan and the same thing happened - it found the Hupigon in c:\system volume information\_restore etc.

Following advice i saw on this website i have changed passwords and frozen my internet banking until this is fixed.

Following the instructions I found on the website i performed the ATF clean, the Malwarebytes scan, rebooted (I hope i was right to reboot then!) and then did a HJT scan.

Here are the previously mentioned two scan logs.

Thanks again for any help anyone can give me!

Hi. Combofix does not seem to have posted a log in the location you specified. I did another HJT scan and here is the log. My firewall popped up to warn me about things several times. I made screen shots of most of the ones that seemed unusual to me, I hope that's not a waste of time. It doesn't want to let me post many per post so I hope it's ok to post them over several.
Last set and HJT log.

I added many things to the "trusted" bit of kaspersky and allowed registry changes.
Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Oh! That was quick! I have a few questions: I just started my computer up and Kaspersky has not started up! And the Windows firewall is now active. Has something been set that I need to change to make Kaspersky come back up? I normally use Firefox. Do settings in Internet Explorer or in Internet Options affect Firefox? Even if I dont use Internet Explorer, should I set these settings? A desktop icon has appeared for Internet Explorer which was not there before…. I read another topic where someone was infected with a back door trojan who was told that it may be worth re-formatting and reinstalling. They said that they could not be sure what had been modified and if I understood it right, that potentially there could be a trojan waiting to go off somewhere still in the computer. Is this something I need to consider? Many Thanks

Oh! That was quick! I have a few questions:

I just started my computer up and Kaspersky has not started up! And the Windows firewall is now active. Has something been set that I need to change to make Kaspersky come back up? Nothing we did would cause that to happen. Try manually starting Kaspersky or reboot again.

I normally use Firefox. Do settings in Internet Explorer or in Internet Options affect Firefox? Even if I dont use Internet Explorer, should I set these settings? The settings are different but you need to make those changes to IE.

A desktop icon has appeared for Internet Explorer which was not there before….I'll assume it's from running the scans.

I read another topic where someone was infected with a back door trojan who was told that it may be worth re-formatting and reinstalling. They said that they could not be sure what had been modified and if I understood it right, that potentially there could be a trojan waiting to go off somewhere still in the computer. Is this something I need to consider? I saw no evidence of any backdoor infection, but you might have already removed it. If it were me and I felt I had a backdoor infection, I'd reformat.

Many Thanks

Oh right! Hm. Yes when I scanned and found the problem initially, it said it had detected Hupigon back door. I will reboot and scan. If i do reformatt and reinstall, is it possible to backup data safely? If i back up things I want to keep, would there be any way of knowing whether or not a trojan was lying in wait in one of those files? Out of interest, what is ComboFix? Can someone like you use it to create a custom fix for a problem? Thanks again! *goes to reboot and rescan*

Data files for the most part are safe. Now if you're talking about downloaded items like songs / movies from P2P sites, you're on your own there.

It's another tool we use. Yes we helpers that are trained using it can "custom fix". It's a very powerful tool that if used wrong can kill your pc.
I don't know where it's picking up those URL websites. Are you connected to those sites?

All the tools used will have the bad files within their folders.

The programs you used, SmitFraud and SDfix need to be uninstalled.

The one, Combofix, I had you install would have been removed IF you followed my all clean post.
It would have also created a new restore point.
*head explodes* I feel a bit silly, as I think that screen shot included mostly old detections! I'm definately not connected to any websites at the moment other than this and some from the list of computer protection/cleanliness that you posted earlier (downloading microsoft updates). Kaspersky is still scanning, spynomore has finished and found a trojan though which I will now remove. I'm not sure if it's related to the overall problem or not. (attatched screen shot) I had run the "run" instructions for removing combo fix prior to last post, I think the screen shot I posted just included old detections. I dont think SDfix or smitfraud are still on my computer - I can't find them anyway! So if I do a reformat and reinstall, that means everything starts from scratch? All new computer? And keeping anything I ever downloaded - I keep at my own risk? I think I'm going to reformat and reinstall. Is there much point in scanning further and updating further? Once you reformat and reinstall, does it completely wipe everything and you can be sure it's all safe? Many thanks for maintained putting-up with my total lack of all knowledge!
