[Closed] Potentially Big Problem

Ok, so, I'd love to post a report from HijackThis so that I could get some help, but therein lies the problem. Usually, when something goes wrong with my computer, I've easily been able to fix it. This is actually the first time I've registered for a computer help forum. I'm getting that desperate.

First off, I'm not able to download anything, which is why I can't post a HijackThis report. My right-click doesn't work either. Anytime I try to update software on my computer, like iTunes, it gives me an error message. And of course, I'm getting pop-ups, which never happens. They seem to be coming from smacchat.com only though. My homepage has also been changed to IEsearch. There's no toolbar for my Internet Explorer, so all the basics, like File and Edit, are unavailable to me.

I need help. :(
Welcome ChaosHTX

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Thanks
John
Hello ChaosHTX

Do you have access to another computer & a flash drive. This way you can download any tools we may need & transfer them to your infected computer until we can get back on line. If so do the following:

Download HijackThis
Download HiJackThis v2.0.2 from here
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your flashdrive
  • Connect your flashdrive to the infected computer
  • Open your flash drive then left click & hold down the button on HJTInstall.exe
  • Drag HJTInstall.exe from your flashdrive to the desktop of the infected computer
  • Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  • Click on Install
  • It will create a HiJackThis icon on the desktop
  • Once installed, it will launch HiJackThis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log
  • Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Alright, I got a log. Here you go:

Hello ChaosHTX
Sorry for the late reply. Some personal issues I needed to sort out.

No Anti-virus
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of anti-virus software.
Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

As you have plugged your flashdrive into an infected computer I want to make sure it is not infected or does not infect your clean pc. So do this on your clean computer:

Flash_Disinfector
  • Download Flash_Disinfector here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it
  • You will be prompted to plug in your USB drive. Plug it in
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Click on File > New Task (Run…). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

ComboFix
As before you will need to download from your clean pc & save to your flashdrive then transfer Combofix.exe to the infected computer, then follow the instructions below:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
How To Use Combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you
Include the following reports for further review so we may continue cleaning the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Hello

FIVE DAY BUMP!

It has been five days since my last post.
  • Do you still need help with this?
  • Do you need more time?
  • Are you having problems following my instructions?
If after 48hrs you have not replied to this thread then it will have to be closed!

Please let me know if there are any problems. Thanks!
