Program Files will not operate

Hello,

I posted and tried to resolve problem in hijack this forum, but tech determined it was not a malware issue and suggested I post in this forum. besides browser not responding when I attempt to download any files ,No programs will operate on my system such as
itunes, Microsoft Works, Word Perfect, Adobe when I open folder that has all programs and I open itunes.exe and click on it I receive error message "problem has been encountered and needs to close.
I do not know how to post a link to my old post as other tech suggested sorry.
I was unable to install 3rd party firewall as suggested and the last windows update

Operating System Windows XP

Welcome to the technical forum here on WTT. I read your HJT link where jpshorstuff assisted you.

To begin, please do the following:

Backup/archive/copy

To be on the safe side I strongly recommend that before doing anything at all you check that your back up/archive/copy of all your important data, drivers, files, settings, work, etc is 100% up to date accurate and reproducible, (even if your back up is even only a day or so out of date, it's worth updating it now.)
Also don't forget to check that you have all your application Installation CD's to hand together with the product keys (including those for Windows itself)

Windows Protected System File Checker SFC

• Start
• Run
• type:sfc /scannow (note the space between c /)
• Have your Win XP installation disc handy as if damaged files are found they will need to be copied across from your disc, if SFC can't find correct copies elsewhere.

Windows XP Installation disc not available or wrong Service Pack - SP1 when SP2 is needed

There are work- arounds to this problem but the easiest, by far is to borrow one and use that. It is perfectly OK to do this, for the purposes of running SFC,and if you ask around all your friends, you are likely to find someone who will be able to help you out.

Well you will need to do it the harder way and as a registry edit will be required it is essential that you back up your registry before you do anything else. Then in the event of trouble it will be easier to repair your registry. Download ERUNT from here: (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html) and take a moment to familiarise yourself with the programme and how to repair your registry with it if it should become necessary. At the same time it would be wise to create a System Restore point, post back here if you need instructions on how to do this.

For the alterations needed to run SFC If you go here (http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html) you will find detailed instructions on the copying of files and the system changes you need to make. When you have followed all the instructions, reboot you machine and try to run SFC again, and please let us know how you go.

The above scan will not leave a report on your desktop, and will take some time. Please insert your OS CD before starting the scan.

Post back when you have completed SFC Scan with an update or if this does not correct your problem.

Back Again, I ran SFC with my Windows OS disc SP1a I have Service PAck 2 but this disc didnt want to run. The Scan completed and I still am having same problems, with browser and windows programs After reboot window appeared Windows Defender application failed to initialize 0x8007002 I clicked OK and window disappeared. What you be able to refer me to a backup tutorial, I really don't have much on the computer but when I used the bckup utility the total estimated time to backup stuff was 11 hours . The other problem I am having backing up is selecting backup destination if I use a removable disc it only allows backup to my A drive which is a floppy drive , not allowing backup to D:(which is DVD drive) or E:drive(which is CD-RW drive). I guess I don't know what I am doing. I would need several hundred floppy disc's . Any help you would be willing to give me is greatly appreciated Thanks

I did point out you must insert the correct OS disk for the SFC Scan to run correctly. Can you borrow a Windows XP/SP2 OS CD to complete the scan correctly?

I am including this link Windows Backup made easy however I am not in favor of any backups other than image which I use on my systems.

Here are links to Ghost 12, and Acronis 10, both excellent image backups to external hard drives so if your HD does fail you can be up and running in about 36 minutes this way.

Initially they are not free, but a very good investment as they have both saved me on many an ocassion especially with the installation of SP3.

If you browse around on the net via google, often there are discounts for the above image software.

There are also forums for Ghost and Acronis which I can guide you to if you are interested in the image software above.

Post back with any other questions as we are only too happy to assist if we can.

Hello, Performed Scan then rebooted computer and computer still has numerous problems with browser and opening program files,.For iexample when I attempt to open Word Perfect I get error message"The install script engine on this machene is older than the version required to run set up. If available please install latest version of IS Script.msi. I have my original cd , but this does not work. I also use a program called Picassa to open pictures using application Picassa.exe system can't find. Smae thing happens when I try and open itunes. If I am on a website and I want to download a program for example, a third party firewall system. The tyask status will wil go back and forth between responding and not responding as shown in windows task manager this will go on indefinately until the browser shuts down If I go to 1 music fileand click on open with Itunes I get error message program not responding with a question if I want to sent error report to Microsoft.. Please let me know what to try next Thank-you

If you have not uninstalled your eTrust anti-virus since you were infected with AntiSpywareXP2009 (Rogue.Antispyware) Then it is HIGHLY likely that your AV protection is now broken and useless, it is also likely that it is the cause of your problems [least I've never seen any AV program surive such an infection unscathed ] and their remnants usually muck things up until removed completly, and re-installed if desired. Attempt to uninstall it….although the more recent versions of AntiSpywareXP2009 (Rogue.Antispyware) have also broken the uninstall program. You may need to visit the eTrust website using another PC and download an uninstaller from them. or copy the uninstaller from another PC, if you have eTrust on another PC in the home. Tallon41
