I've got an old sony vio laptop that im trying to install windows 98 on. Thing is the laptop itself doesn't have a cd drive so I use the dvd docking station that I got with the laptop. So when I go to start the installation it quits to the command prompt and gives an error to the effect of cannot find the cd drive aborting installation. What can I do to alleviate this problem. And sorry in advance if this is the wrong area.

Well 1st let me say I hope paws or another tech drops in on this one. They have more current experence with older OS's.
IT's been a long time since I did anything with Win 98. But a couple of things that came to mind were. 1.) can you boot from the DvD (win98 CD)?
If not I think I remember that you need to create a win98 boot diskette, the 3.5" floppy.

check into those and perhaps a more knowlegable tech will jump in and give some more meaningfull advise.

I can boot to cd but when setup loads it says it cannot find the drive that the cd is in. And I just remembered that there was another error saying that it could not find the drivers for either "OEMCD001" or "MSCD001". Hope this helps a bit.

I wish I could be of more help. I will find some reading material on win98 installations and try and post back when I have some more information.

The OEMCD001 and/or the MSCD001 are drivers for the CD rom. I'm guessing here with some experence/bad memory thrown in here. But it seems like a boot floppy with the drivers might be the way to go. I don't remember the specifics of the setup and installation. But I know it needs to load those drivers so it can access the files on the CD.

While it's booting up how far does it get before you get the error. Is it right at the start? or shortily after that?
Since it's been so long for me and win98, could you kind of step though what messages show on your screen?
That I hope will jogg my memory some. (we hope) :)

As far as how long before it gives me the errors its just after I make a choice for boot to windows 98cd, boot with and boot without cd support. But as far as the drivers go I've been searching and have come up with nothing.

Do you have access to another computer? one that already ahs win98 on it? If you do then you can create a win98 boot floppy, the drivers get added to the floppy when you create the boot disk.

Because of the order of things when your booting from the cd, it can't load the drivers for the CD because they are on the CD.

If you can get your hands on a win98 boot CD it would help.
Hi,
This can be a tough one… The usual solution in the workshop is to use an external CD drive, we use a parallel port version….. see if one of your chums has one, if so borrow it and the driver disc and see how you go.

if you have no joy there then you can try a Win 98SE Boot floppy disc that will include generic CD drivers that might work with your docking station.
Have a look here for the downloads you need.

still no luck EDIT: I don't know if this will matter at all but does it make a difference if the docking station is SCSI.
Hi. Yes . this is an unusual situation. If you can get the cd drive in the docking station recognised using the generic drivers on the Win 98SE floppy disc, you may be in luck. If not then, its one of the following you will need: 1 Install the OS from down a network 2 borrow, or as an extreme last resort ,buy an external cd drive 3 Get your local competent computer tech to do it for you (obviously at a cost) Note I had a quick look on ebay to see what was immediately available and soon found this: EXTERNAL CD-ROM DRIVE FUJITSU TRAVELLER II FITS ALL LAPTOPS WORKS WITH DOS WINDOWS 98/ME/2K/XP COMES WITH PCMCIA LEAD SLIMLINE IN SILVERY BLUE (drivers available by download) The "Buy it now" price was (GBP) £9.99+postage which is about USD $20+postage. Obviously there are risks buying this way but it does indicate that you should be able to acquire an external cd drive fairly inexpensively. However I'm sure one of your chums will be able to come up trumps, if you ask around, and lend you one! Good luck Regards paws
I had downloaded the Windows 98se boot disk you had wanted me to get and no luck. I had seen an image called Boot Disk Essentials on the same site. Was that the one you were wanting me to get or was it the Win 98se boot disk?
Hi yes the Windows 98se boot disc is the one you want……..if no joy with that ,then its the other suggestions you need to follow Regards paws
