Hello. I have recently had 2 issues develop within days of each other but seem to be unrelated. The first involved a pop-up Windows error box saying Windows can no longer check for updates. The error code is 80070424. I found a topic on this at the Windows forums but the fix (sorry, cannot recall atm what it was) did not work. I also tried System Restore back to a date when I know I was not having this issue but that too failed. The second problem is with my AV software. I was using the free version of Avast but when I tried to run a scan the other day an error said my date/time stamp was not correct. I then checked the clock in the task bar and sure enough it was wrong and further checking showed the date was set to Jan. 2007. I reset both of them manually because the auto feature would not work. The date/time are still correct as of today. But, Avast still would not update. So, I just decided to uninstall and re install the AVG freebie instead. That download was uneventful but when I try to launch the software I get a Windows error that says: "The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect." I have not tried to Google that one yet as it seems I am having multiple Windows failures and wanted to get some help from the good folks over here asap. I did get nervous thinking a virus had perhaps made a successful invasion so I ran an on-line AV scan with Kapersky(sp) which found nothing. Spyware wise, since my Spyware Doctor 5.0 is/was not compatible with 64 bit, I am currently using A-Squared, Spyware Terminator, Defender and Spyware Blaster. The last thing I tried to do was a "repair" booting from the Vista disc because I thought there was an actual repair choice where Windows would compare installed files with the original disc and fix any corruptions or issues accordingly. But, the only repair choice was a start-up repair which was not my problem. I ran it anyway and it found no problems. I have included my dx log in anticipation it would be requested. Thanks much in advance. —————— System Information —————— Time of this report: 5/27/2008, 19:52:27 Machine name: KEITH-PC Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: System manufacturer System Model: System Product Name BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Processor: Intel® Core™2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz Memory: 2046MB RAM Page File: 1252MB used, 4734MB available Windows Dir: C:\Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 10 DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 6.00.6001.18000 32bit Unicode ———— DxDiag Notes ———— Display Tab 1: No problems found. Dang, 89 views and no responses. C'mon WhatTheTech gurus, I'm countin on ya to help me get these issues resolved ! Please respond asap. I can not get Windows updates nor can I run my AV software. Helpppp…… Thanks.
Hi Havoc

Sorry to hear 'bout your jeopardy, but its fixable.

I'm not that Vista knowledged, so please bear with me, if I suggest something that needs
to be run as administrator and I forget to mention B)

To "fix" update problem. Download this Microsoft tool. There are also manual methods available on the same page.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520

Also check if this fixes your time/clock problem. There are many suggestions and solutions when googling "error code 80070424",
but I found that most where for the 32bit versions, 64bit is somewhat trickier.

Regarding Avast. Sometimes it doesn't un-install properly via the Remove / add programs. But theres a tool available for just that.
Avast Un-install tool
Remember to read instructions for the usage of this tool.

In general, when un-installing any programs, be sure to close it first, and in the tray by the clock.

Optional, you may want to remove both Avast and AVG in the process, and then re-install either one of them. The reason for this advice, is that anti-virus programs installs registry keys, and typically many cross-overs exist. And if you have had problems with one or both, chances are that you may have a faulty install, which certainly isn't desireable with your safety. Run the disc-cleanup tool before installing anew.

Disc-cleanup: click once on your system-drive. Click the disc-cleanup radio button next to the "cheese-wheel". Run the tool.
Any other tools, be be handy as well, such as Ccleaner.

Preferably, all this should be done in safe-mode.

Regards Abydos
NoJoy Abydos. I had already tried that download from the MS site but tried again just to be sure. It sems to try to download but nothing happens after that. I also tried the manual method and was able to delete these files, • Qmgr0.dat • Qmgr1.dat but, the updater still errors out with the same code 80070424.
Also, for what its worth, I found this potential "fix" at another forum and tried it without success. The 4th and 6th commands from the top failed but the rest of them succeeded. But, Update stills give the same friggin error code :pullhair: .

Please try the following:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try again.

*EDIT*

I also tried this one, really thought it was going to work. Ran the .bat file from Notepad as instructed, everything seemed to install appropriately, but still getting same error, dayam.

Just got off with microsoft… here is the fix:

Copy the following and past it into notepad… save the doc and rename it as
a bat file (example: update.bat) execute the bat file and reboot. Hope it
works as well for you as it did me:

Thanks Abydos.

If you are getting this error while updating from window,it means your windows registry has some problem. You can fix it very easily.

Start-run-type the following command and press enter
%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

You have done. Now you can update your windows without any problem.

Or try this method:
1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type net stop wuauserv and press Enter.
4.Now delete (or put in recycle bin) the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (but not the SoftwareDistribution folder)
(doesn't matter if some will not go)
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and
press Enter.
6. Now try Windows Update again.

The first suggestion did not solve the problem. I tried the second one but was not sure which "contents" of the Software Distribution to delete. Got worried if I just sent it all to Recycle bin that I might be doing something incorrectly. Can you clarify that by chance?

Thanks
Hey Havoc

I think the idea behind this "fix", was to start a clean slate with regards to updates.
Deleting your software-distribution but not the folder itself, will clear update
history. Any choke points / out-of-sync updates, because of failed downloads/installs of updates and
the update history will be cleared. So its perfectly safe to delete the content within the folder.

OK, I deleted the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, still getting the same friggin error code. Is there supposed to to be 2 SoftwareDistribution folders? One was listed as SoftwareDistribution.old. I deleted the contents of both of the folders. Thanks
Hi Havoc

Not being a Vista geek, I must wave the white flag on this one.
I have no ideas as to how to fix it. Google searches, comes up with
those things already tried, or with non-quality answers / suggestions.

Maybe you should contact Microsoft directly over the phone…….
Explain the problem, and what have been tried so far.

And perhaps someone pops by here with a eureka solution.

Regards Abydos
