I have a Dell Demension 4700 computer running Windows XP service pack 3. It is crawling. Outlook Express hangs up 50% of the time. Other programs take forever to function. Everything does load. It just takes for ever. I am running Trend Micro internet security. I use to have Norton but I removed it before installing Trend Micro. I can't find any mal ware with daily scans. Hard drive has been defraged. Problem has been getting worse for about one month. I didn't install any new software and I am very careful about web searching. A log file is below. Thanks for any help.

Run - ATF Cleaner instructions here.

—————-

Then download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
While waiting for your suggestions I used the Windows System Restore command to restore my computer to a point about three weeks past. That eliminated the XP Service Pack 3 but did not solve the problem. When I got your reply I ATF Cleaner and then Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Nothing was found by either program. I then created another Highjackthis log. I have posted both logs below: Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Healeyguy

I ran the Norton Removal tool and ran another Hijackthis log. Do you see anything else I can remove or should remove to speed up my computer?
Thanks again for any help.

Thank you. I followed your instructions. There was one error message after running Hijackthis but the items checked did not show up again on a subsequent scan. Error Message: Unexpected error occurred! Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe). Please send a report to [removed], mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard. The ESET scan found nothing. Is it possible something is wrong with the mother board? I ran different tests (Fix-it Utilities 8) and it shows that the hard drive is good and nothing wrong with memory, etc.? Any other place to look?? Thanks,
Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Here are the logs you requested:

Do you see anything?

Computer is still slow.

Thanks for any help. I'll keep trying anything you can think of.

Healeyguy.
Well looks like you are running two programs with real time protection.
This may be the reason. One should not be starting up at startup.

Other than that I'm not seeing anything in your logs.
Let's do a little cleanup. Then I'll close this thread.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
