Hello !

I'm a New Member but still i'm very much a techie guy. Normally i keep my system well protected and have had no serious troubles for ages. BUT for the last several weeks i have recurrent strange problems with my Internet Explorer  :

  • IE window opens by itself automatically !
  • IE then goes to a random page, not a hijacked one but to a page which i had visited sometime !
  • Sometimes IE is not explicitly open but just runs in the background process !
  • All my computer applications de-focus or de-select during operation. (which means IE is working in background?) !
  • IE has become almost non-usable because it gets closed by itself when i'm using it intendedly !!

It all sounds like a ghost from a creepy movie  , please believe me i'm not insane, infact a former multimedia programmer. To summarise : IE opens or runs in background process when i had not activated it. And when i intend to use it, it just closes out.

My computer is protected by :
  • Symantec Antivirus - a full system scan yields NO VIRUS
  • Spybot search and destroy - latest update, SD Resident & Tea Timer active - full scan says congratulations, so NO INFECTION
Its NO VIRUS, NO SPYWARE, IE IS NOT HIJACKED BUT IT GOES TO A URL FROM HISTORY !?!

After a fresh start and 30 mins of operation of my computer, here is the HijackThis REPORT :

Even if i may sound a bit comic and the problem not so serious (as i presume) because of lack of virus or spyware(i'm sorry i'm not the expert to decide that); but i'm highly concerned because of 3 issues :
  • IE has become NON-USABLE!! Its a disaster because even if i use Firefox, some financial sites work only in IE.
  • Just imagine if your cursor DEFOCUSES every 5-10 mins in any application, how can one work !!
  • I fear that i maybe wrong and its the beginning of a serios browser hijacking.(Already a suspicion remains on the large internet usage)

Please HELP me! And save me from the hell days of formatting and reinstalling all applications!!

THANKS A LOT in advance.

Hello Nascent

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum Sorry for the delay in responding but with the amount of people posting with infected computers there are not enough hours in the day

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

Your version of HJT is outdated and may not be showing everything, uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post the Malwarebytes log and new HJT log from Trendmicro, please keep it in black as the colors are hard on these old eyes :smack:

Hello Ken,

Thanks a lot for pitching in. I also understand that many others are in need of more serious help than mine.

I did precisely as you had instructed :

  • Installed ATF Cleaner and cleared up all
  • Installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, updated it, did a Quick Scan. It didn't find any infection, so no disinfection and no restart of the system was prompted
  • Uninstalled my old version of HJT and installed the new one from your link, did the scan

Here is the Malwarebytes log :

Nascent,

Thanks for the new logs, not looking at anything bad. Lets run this free online Virus scanner from Kaspersky and see if it picks anything up .

I am wondering about these programs if you use them or can they be uninstalled.

C:\Program Files\IPMsg
C:\Program Files\Commander Pro
InterVideo WinCinema Manager

See if you can run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Hi Ken,

Sorry for the delay the scans took a looong time!

Here is what i did :

  • Removed the program Commander Pro (its the UPS software but not used anyway)
  • The program IPMsg is used, i use that to message the other computers on my home network
  • The program InterVideo WinCinema Manager do not exist. It has been uninstalled longtime ago. Maybe this registry entry is residual?
  • Then did the Kaspersky Online Virus Scan, it found around 100 infected objects. I'm very upset about that!
  • So i did something extra :
  • Uninstalled my Symantec Anti-Virus (expired!) and thereby deleted the quarantine (50% of Kaspersky detection was Symantec quarantined objects)
  • Installed McAfee Security Center, updated it, scanned and disinfected whatever it found.
  • Configured the Personal Firewall of McAfee (blocked Windows Explorer, the internet permission, hope it doesn't need that)
  • Scanned again using Kaspersky Online Virus Scan, now it reports 20 infected objects.
  • Finally a HJT Scan.

Hope my deviation to fix the Anti-Virus will not affect your evaluation of my system. I'm sorry but i just intended to help and hope it could. Also i do not know if the following programs require to be BLOCKED via the Firewall from Internet permission (currently they have FULL ACCESS) :
  • C:WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
  • C:WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe
  • C:WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
  • C:WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe

Nascent,

These are cracked copies of this program and there illegal, I won't be able to help you any longer until you uninstall these from your system. Cracked software almost 100% of the time include malware.

E:\Downloads\Softwares\HumanConcepts.OrgPlus.Professional.v5.0.137.Cracked.WinAll-HS.ZIP
E:\Downloads\Softwares\HumanConcepts.OrgPlus.Professional.v5.1.168.Cracked.WinAll-HS.ZIP

Uninstall them and Run Kaspersky again and post the log

Ken,

I'm sorry about those files. They are not installed programs but only stray downloaded files. I have checked and deleted them from the system.

Now a fresh Kaspersky scan and HJT scan has been done.

Hi,

These are ok
1. C:WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
2. C:WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe
3. C:WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
4. C:WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe

The infected files that Kaspersky found are in your System Restore

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important

  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point
System Restore Tutorial <-- If you need it

I can't read your HJT log the way you posted it , make sure that wordwrap is turned off

Nascent, Log looks fine  Are you still having issues with IE ? This may be a windows related problem as all the scans and your HJT log are fine

Hi Ken, Yes, i just realise that the IE is no more in trouble. Don't know which action or when it was resolved. Anyway i worked for a few hours this evening and see no problem of IE opening or closing by itself. Its all rectified. Thanks a lot for the all the patient help, ken. I hope this issue can be closed. BTW, i dont have a clue of what caused the problem. Is it really the Viruses ?

Hard to say what caused it, it could have been a number of things, I saw entries for the Zlob infection in System Restore but not on any of your scans or logs, but its gone now.
