Hey,

I've tried spybot, adaware, and the Trend housecall and mcafee virus scans. None of them have turned up anything wrong with my system, but I know there must be something wrong. My homepage is changed everytime I open up IE, and whenever I'm viewing a page it will randomly close itself or minimize itself. When I'm doing something else, IE will randomly open. There are occasional popups, but nothing too bad. On top of that, my computer makes really strange noises. The best way I can think of to describe it is when your computer is about to shut down, it makes the sound like everything is just turning itself off. It makes that sound constantly, like it's about to crash, but it never does. It's just annoying and worrisome. I would appreciate any help or advice. A friend suggested I post to you guys and get some help. I have run HijackThis and here is the log it returned:

steiiax – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

Well, you have a number of malware infections. I'll start writing up a fix for them.

But, in the meantime, I most strongly recommend you remove Kazaa from your system, as it is a notorious source of these types of infections.

While Kazaa is not technically malware by itself, it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of.

Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/swi/articles/p2p/

To remove it, use 'Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs' to remove any reference to Kazaa, Altnet and P2P Networking.

If you keep Kazaa, you will continue to become infected, probably as fast as you can get things cleaned out.

Once Kazaa is gone, run HijackThis to create another logfile and send it to me in your reply to this message. I'll follow up with a fix for all the problems we can see in your log now, plus any new ones that show up in the meantime.

Thanks
daveai
Hey there, Thanks for your help. Actually, I have attempted to remove Kazaa before, but I can't. Everytime I try to remove it via the control panel, it says "error in C:/windows/system32/cd_clint.dll Missing entry: ServiceRundll." There is no option in the Kazaa folder to uninstall, so I really have no clue how else to do it. If you could let me know of another way to remove the program, I would be forever in your debt. Thanks again, and once I hear back from you I'll try whatever you suggest and then run the log again.
Thanks for the response, and for the clarification about Kazaa.

Try this: Download, install and use this uninstaller on Kazaa:
ADRMPRO2

It is a tool for removing programs with 'broken' install processes. If it doesn't work, just move on tho the next step.

Also, use 'Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs' to remove any of these you find:

P2P Networking
AltNet
Viewpoint Media Player

‘TV Media’, ‘
TV Media Display'
‘MS T-Media Display’.

Then, for the rest of the fix…

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". Open Windows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option, and un-check "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files" options. Then click the "Apply To All Folders" button.

1 – Please see How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software.

Don´t use AdAware yet.

If you already have AdAwareinstalled, then make sure it's up to date. Just open Adaware and click on "Check for Updates Now" and then "Connect". It will find a new reference-file. Click "ok" and let it download and install the updates by clicking on "Finish" .This will return you to the main screen. You should now see Reference File # : 01R337 11.08.2004 or higher listed.

Don´t use AdAware yet.

2 – Download the newest version of CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom (1.59.1). Run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'.

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up: (NOTE that some of these are likely to be gone because of CWShredder) Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://solongas.com/sp.htm?id=617

And, this is an optional item you may choose to fix:

Office Startup Asistant is an optional item that if checked, will eliminate a known resource hog. You will still be able to start Office components from the Start menu. This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

Use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\AANTX.dll<– this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Lfipohop.dll<– this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msbe.dll<– this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mscb.dll<– this file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\idctup20.exe<– this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysstartup.exe<– this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\trrcem.exe<– this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\xzwojo.exe<– this file

C:\WINDOWS\bad3074.exe <– this file if it exists

Updates.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)

winlogin.exe <– this file NOTE THE SPELLING, this IS NOT winlogon.exe (use "Start > Search" to find it)

C:\Documents and Settings\#1\Application Data\DownloadPlus.exe<– this file

C:\Program Files\BroadJump\<– this folder
C:\Program Files\Kazaa\<– this folder
C:\Program Files\NaviSearch\<– this folder
C:\Program Files\TV Media\<– this folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\<– this folder

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

NOTE: If you can´t delete a file or files:

Start Hijackthis and click on "Config > Misc Tools. At the new screen click on the "Delete a file on reboot" button. You will be presented with a dialog asking you to pick a file. Copy and paste the location of the file into the file name field and click "Open".

Hijackthis will prompt you to reboot. Please do so and after the reboot use Windows Explorer confirm that the file no longer exists. If it has been removed then do the same processs with any other files you cannot delete.

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes, inluding any you cannot find.

If needed, go back into Safe Mode for the following step.

5 – Then, while still in safe mode, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, to completely empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely, please close all instances of Outlook and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click "OK".

Then, use Windows Explorer to empty out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to each folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – Now scan with Adaware SE and let it remove any bad files found.

Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by AdAware SE.

7 – Reboot into normal mode and then run either of these two Online virus scans: Panda Active Scan or TrendMicro Housecall and put on Auto Clean.

8 – Reboot again, and post a fresh HijackThis log in this thread. And, if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.
.
Thanks
daveai
Hey,

I did everything you suggested. The uninstaller you recommended did not uninstall Kazaa, so I just went on with your instruction. As you said, there were a few files that were no longer there after I ran CWShredder. I had no problems with any of the steps and I ran HijackThis again. Here is the newest log:

Congratulations, based on your last HijackThis logfile, no spyware was found. Good job :)

Now, please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
