I need some help. I'm running XP SP2, but let me know if you need any additional info. My computer was working great for quite some time and all of a sudden i started having problems. Pretty much any software or program that is related to windows or microsoft won't work right. I can burn CD's in Nero and open other programs that i have installed and they all seem normal. I can open IE and it will display the home page. Once i do a search or type in a different website, IE will show that it is opening the page and then suddenly the window will close. Baffled, i tried to play a movie in Media Player and the same thing happened. Figured i had a bug in windows so i figured i'd open up system restore and restore it to a previous date. Well it won't leave the restore window open longer than a split second. I have numerous anti-spyware programs and anti-virus program on my computer. I am running Ad-aware SE freeware, Spybot S&D, Trojan Hunter, Ewido Anti-spyware, and Kaspersky Anti-virus. I may be leaving a few out but you get the idea. None of these programs can find anything and i've even ran them in Safe Mode. My Hijack This log looks clean, so i don't think i have any kind of mal-ware or virus. What in the world is going on with this computer and how can i fix it? I have ALOT of software on this computer and would be a huge pain in the butt to reinstall windows and all of the software programs. This would be a last ditch effort to get back up and going. I've considered doing a windows repair with the original XP cd, but wasn't sure if that would require me to reinstall every program i have on this computer. I'm open to any suggestions or ideas. If there are any programs i need to get or download to help, please let me know. I have a process viewer program and none of the programs are categorized as a high threat and i recognize every process to an installed program. Seems that the only problems i am having are XP related software. I remember the Spybot TeaTimer window opened and mentioned that the system32/lsass was trying to be accessed from an outside source. I denied it from being accessed thinking it was a trojan or something trying to access my computer from a remote source. Just throwing everything out there that i remember. It seemed the problem occured shortly after denying lsass from the outside source. Thanks in advance!!!!!
Hi buening,

You posted a HJT Log on August 14 with a similar complaint description.
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…mp;#entry307450
Is this the same machine/same problem.

Please notice that Micah gave you a specific recommendation and instructions to follow for removal.
It appears that you did not reply.

You may want to pick up where you left off.

Otherwise, how about giving us the exact Error Messages and computer behavior that you notice when the problem occurs.

Have you Run - Windows File Protection System File Checker?
Have you Run - chkdsk /r, from your recovery console?
Have you considered a Repair Installation? (don't do a Repair Installation if your machine is still infected)

If you can supply Error Message information or other more specific signs and symptoms information we may be better able to help.

Best Regards
buening, please post a new HijackThis! log into the thread that Dough gave a link to before trying any fixes.

I may want to modify things if your situation has changed.

:)
Yeah i guess i forgot to follow up on the last post. The previous problem was the Vundo malware and the program he provided found it on the second try. There are no signs of Vundo through HijackThis log or using the Vundo remover program multiple times. I will post a Hijack This log tonight when i get home from work. I'll have to email it to me cause i can't get on the internet on that machine :( To answer the questions. There are NO error messages whatsoever and i tried going through some windows folders hoping that it keeps some kind of error log when each window terminates. If you know where to look then please let me know. The computer does not act slow when a program starts to open. For example, when i open System Restore the window will just bleep on the screen. I can see that it is the System Restore program but it is gone in a flash. Internet Explorer will open correctly and go to the home page at normal speed (cable internet). Once i do a search in Google or type in a new web address, the bottom left corner will display the page it is trying to open and when it appears to be close to fully opening (green bar in lower right) the window will disappear. Same goes with Microsoft Media Player. The player will open as long as I'm not playing a file. As soon as i open a file it will appear to almost start to play and then it will disappear. These are the only three programs i have tested, but seems to be any file that comes with XP and is not a third party program. Have you Run - Windows File Protection System File Checker? No, and was not aware of one. I'll do a search on it Have you Run - chkdsk /r, from your recovery console? Not yet, wanted some opinions before i did something Have you considered a Repair Installation? (don't do a Repair Installation if your machine is still infected) Considered it, as in my original post. I thought i remember having to reinstall all of the programs when a repair installation is completed. Thus i posted on here for possibly a better alternative. As i said above, i'll post a HiJack This log tonight. I'm no computer expert but have some mediocre knowledge when it comes to spyware and such. It's all been reporting clean.
Hi buening, Glad to see that you'll be posting a fresh HJT Log for Micah to examine. Malware can be devious and quite "hidden". At this point in my learning, I also have a somewhat "mediocre" knowledge of malware and removal tools, so when I run into such problems, I check with the Experts. As to the very basic system routines that I mentioned in my earlier post, I'm glad that you will be investigating. Expanding your knowledge base is a good thing. I'll follow along on your progress with Micah in the Malware Removal Forum as an observer. Once malware problems appear to no longer be at issue, Micah may give you additional system-related recommendations or bump you back over to this "other computer problems" Forum for additional problem-solving. I've set my board controls to alert me if/when you post back here into this thread and will be available to re-examine the situation at that time. Best Regards
Ok here is the HiJack This log. There is one thing that i didn't notice before and don't recognize it. It is the 021 - SSODL. I am currently running the Scannow System File Checker. Let me know if there are any changes or red flags that you see on my log. You will probably notice Nortons AND Kaspersky on my computer. I had Norton on the computer and this started happening so i installed Kaspersky, thinking that Norton was not finding a key virus but Kaspersky found nothing as well. I will delete one of them to prevent having two anti-virus softwares on one computer (which i heard was bad?).

Hi buening, Please post your HJT Log over in the Malware Removal Forum in the thread where you had already been working with Micah. If you can't find it, use the link in my reply above. Best Regards
Oops, sorry. I ran the Scannow System File Checker and it kept asking for my XP cd. The CD was in the drive and is the only one i have and it would access the CD for awhile and then ask for it again. So i kept hitting retry and it eventually finished. The computer is still doing the same thing. If the HiJack This log looks ok then what would be a suggestion in getting this fixed? Re-install? Which is best, the "Upgrade" from the XP cd when i am in windows or booting from the XP cd and going that route?
buening,

Please let us know the current status of functioning/problems that you are experiencing with your computer.

If you are still having the same difficulty…

First, Save important files, data, documents and media to CD

Second Run Chkdsk /r from your Repair Console

If the above doesn't help, then…
Run Windows File Protection System File Checker
Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow <—- please note the space between "c" and "/"
Have your XP Installation CD in place in a CD ROM drive (if it initiated automatically simply Close it but leaveit in the Drive)

Note: You may run into problems running SFC, if your XP Installation CD does not have SP2 embedded.
There a few ways around this problem:
1. direct SFC searches to C:\Windows\i386 (instead of having it search your Installation CD)
or
2. Obtain an XP Installation disk that does have SP2 embedded.
or
3. Obtain an SP2 Installation CD (you can order one from Microsoft for $9.00, to arrive within one week)
4. Download SP2 from Microsoft and perform the "slip-stream procedure to create an XP installation CD with SP2 embedded.
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

(Now you can use your Newly Created XP Installation CD with SP2 embedded for use when you wish to Run SFC or if you decide to do a Repair Installation)

If the above doesn't help, then…
Fourth, Run an ® Repair Installation, from your Repair Console.

(Both CHKDSK Repair Installation are "supposedly" non-destructive and will leave your programs, preferences, configurations, documents and such in place as they always have been.)
Nevertheless, it is good practice to back up important items prior to CHKDSK or Repair Installation.

Please keep us posted with your progress or questions.
While your problem is unusual, many Members will likely benefit from the solutions that have been suggested here.

Best Regards
As stated above, i ran the Win file protection system checker and it didn't help any. So then i decided to do a repair install of XP SP2 from a slipstreamed CD that i made. WELL, it is now giving me a DATA ERROR (Cyclic Redundancy) and opens a log file. Now i'm thinking the slipstreamed CD is carp** but i can't get it to get out of the darn Windows Installation!! After i restart the computer, it goes into the blue windows screen where it has the multiple bullets along the left side saying "verifying components, installing windows, finalizing install" or something to that matter. It is on the "installing windows" bullet and giving me that error. It doesn't give me the option to boot normally to windows. Any ideas how i can get out of this install? I've tried getting the screen to open to go into Safe Mode but it automatically boots to the the install. NOTE: The install is in Windows. It goes through the black XP screen with the status bar going back and forth. It's the simplest things that cause the headaches :rant2: Let me know if you have any ideas on how to terminate an upgrade install of XP
This describes CRC:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/cyclic-redundancy.html

Essentially you may have errors that occurred when you burnt the CD (but maybe not)

This is Microsofts blurb on CRC during XP installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811150

From the Microsoft point of view, the problem is most likely errors on your Hard Drive.
They recommend the same "chkdsk /r" procedure that I recommended to you earlier.

Get that Hard Drive's structure cleaned up BEFORE attempting XP Repair Installation.

Getting out of an XP installation once it has started can be like "uncutting a board" you've already sawed halfway or all the way through it, and you can't uncut it or stretch it after it's cut.

cntrl-alt-delete Or Esc may get you out of the install, but may not prevent the mess that the partial install may have caused.

If possible, allow the Installation to complete or run until it reports that it has failed and will exit.
That may minimize any resulting mess.

It will be "interesting" to follow along with your progress.
Even though your slipstreamed CD may be OK, I'd toss it and make a new one.

Sorry I don't have any more optimistic suggestions.

Work on the Hard Drive with chkdsk /r from Recovery Panel.

Best Regards
Thanks for the response. I have a few different XP cds and neither will work. It is almost like it uploaded all of the software from the CD and stored it in a temporary folder. Now it is going straight into the XP installation program and is accessing the temporary folder only to find a CRC. So then it pops up a window says: "Fatal Error An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing. One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Data error (cyclic redundancy check). If you are installing from a CD, there might be a problem with the disc; try cleaning the disc or using another disc. If you are installing from the network, it is possible that not all of the files were copied correctly to your disk drive. Run the disk checking utility on your installation drive from the Recovery Console and start setup again. Press OK to view the Setup log file." I click the log file and see the error, which it states: "Error: Installation Failed: G:\I386\asms. Error Message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) Error: SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "G:\I386\asms\6000\MSFT\VCRTL\VCRTL.MAN" on line 11." Now, i'd love to be able to get into the Recovery Console and do a check disk. I was able to get to the screen to boot to Safe Mode, but once i got in safe mode it stated that "Setup cannot run in Safe Mode" Normally, when i choose to either start up in Safe Mode or normal mode (when doing an install on existing XP system) it will ask me which operating system i want to run and will have the XP at the top and XP Setup just below it. It now doesn't even ask me which system i want to run, so it must have already written over most of the existing XP or something. I will try to boot to command prompt and see if it will let me do the check disk from there. I will report back if i get any results. Now, if it won't work then what in the world can i do? I can't even get it to boot from the CD to restart the XP setup. It will spin the CD's but it won't go into the normal DOS setup. Instead it just acts like it is starting windows normal and then goes to the blue XP setup screen. Grrr, I'm stumped on this one. At this point I'd even wipe out Windows and reinstall but it won't even let me do that! BTW i've tried all of my XP CD's and none of them do any different. It has to be reading files from a temporary folder which it uploaded from the bad CD. That bad CD is now in the trash :( If you have any ideas let me know please
ReBoot and immediately go into BIOS/SETUP (usually have to press F2 or Del, or F12 the screen will tell you) Change the Boot Order so that your Optical Drive (CD ROM) is the First Drive. Exit Saving Changes. Place an XP Installation CD into the CD ROM. Power Up the machine. 1. Boot with your windows CD It will take some time as the CD loads various files 2. Type R to Enter the Recovery Console 3. Enter the Administrator password (if there is one) 4. Type: chkdsk c: /r and press Enter <<
Ok, so it won't just go to the command prompt, so i'm out there. I did have a spare harddrive which has windows installed on it and am able to boot into windows on that harddrive, with my other hard drive as a slave. Ok, now for the question. Does anyone know where the windows setup files are located when it uploads them from a CD? Basically what i need to do is cancel this install, and then start with a new install. I'm to the point where i'm pretty much willing to reinstall all of my software, although a huge pain, just to get this beast up and going again. Also, now that i am into windows i will try the check disc on drive C. My current operating system on my spare harddrive is F: in case you were confused. I'll report back if i get the check disk/r to work on my bad drive. Thanks for the help by the way :)
