Slower than I expect, always clicking away

I have a problem (perhaps) with a computer that's slower than I would think. The fan is frequently on, and the computer is frequently whirring away. Maybe that's just the way it's supposed to be with Vista, but I would like to think it could be better. I have tried to be diligent with firewall, AV and a couple of good antispy programs.
I'm hoping someone may see something that would explain the symptoms that I describe. Thanks for any help.

drbandage,

Welcome, I helped you here once before it appears on a different computer and you never followed through, we do not have the time and man power to analyze a log, work up a fix only to have the poster not follow through, we have to many people posting with infected computers that are in dire need of help.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Instant_Blue…ate_t76455.html

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

The rest of your log looks fine, but run the free virus scanner from Kaspersky and post the log along with a new HJT log.

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

If Kaspersky does not pick up anything bad then I will link you to some windows forums that deal with hardware issues.
Ken - You really know how to make a guy feel welcome: "you never followed through, we do not have the time and man power to analyze a log, work up a fix only to have the poster not follow through, we have to many people posting with infected computers that are in dire need of help." Please note that I posted promptly on four different occasions on that thread, all while being polite about receiving any help. Ultimately, you thought my log looked just fine, and only an AVG scan was left, "just to be sure". So, any comments about not following through are grossly overstated, and unwarranted. Quit trying to play the martyr, it doesn't suit you. I shouldn't even need to mention that my father died about that time and that I was hospitalized for the first of seven different occasions in the past year for a serious recurrent illness. Some things are more important than putting the cherry on Ken's sundae. If you don't know someone else's circumstances, don't pass judgment. Besides, it just uses your precious bandwidth that could be better used for people in dire need of help. I'll get my help elsewhere. drbandage
drbandage First off I am sorry about you losing your dad, I know how it feels. As far as you not following through, even though at that point your log looked fine I wanted you to run AVG just as a double check to make sure you were ok, our goal is to leave a poster with a clean computer. I never got a reply in 10 days so I closed the thread. We do get a lot of posters that never reply back during the cleaning process and it kind of leaves there system in limbo. We are all volunteers here and we try to help as many people as we can, our goal is a clean computer, not a cherry on the sundae. Its your call if you want to go elsewhere or continue here. Ken
Ken -

I have included the HJT log as requested. It doesn't appear that the three items checked have changed.

I did do the CCleaner as directed.

Lastly, I tried to load the Kaspersky scanner, but every time I clicked on it, there was no result. No change, no request to activate Active-X., nada. And I did try multple clicks on the link and others.

Thanks for any help that you can offer.

drbandage,
.
Good Morning, glad your back. :) Vista sometimes could be a problem, not a lot of the tools we use to remove infections will work on Vista. Vista also uses a UAC ( user account control ) some progams have to be run on Vista by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator .

You need to shut down Adware, Win Patrol and Spybot as they will prevent those entries from being removed, then try removing them again.

You need to Disable AdWatch in Ad-Aware Se Personal as it can stop our fix.

To Disable AdWatch

  • Open Ad-Aware SE Personal
  • Go to the AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options
  • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
  • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options.
You should enable these after resolving your problem.

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer.<–You need to do this for it to take effect

Win Patrol
you can just right click on it in the System Tray ( by the clock ) and shut it down,

Basically your log looks ok but lets do this, Try running it normally and if it won't run than right click on it and Run as Administrator, this won't clean anything but will give an in depth report.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply
Hi Ken -
This was still a bit of a challenge. Winpatrol didn't offer an easy way to put the pooch to sleep, but I think I managed. Spybot went easily and Adaware was fine.

Still no luck on removing the entries from HJT log. And still no luck trying to get an online scan at Kaspersky site.I just click on it and I get nothing.

I did do the Decker download and I have attached what I believe is the data requested.

Thanks for any help

Good Morning,

What I am trying to do is to determine if a virus or malware is causing you your problem or if its hardware related. Let me ask you a few things, is this a new computer or has it been upgraded to Vista? Do you know the amount of memory you have installed? You can find out by right clicking on My Computer and then click on Properties and towards the bottom it will tell you the amount of memory.

This file looks suspicious, lets check it.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Go to VirusTotal and submit this file for analysis, just use the browse feature and then Send File, you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

C:\Windows\winstart.bat

Then try scanning with another virus scanner, here are two in case the first one does not work.

Run Panda's ActiveScan and perform a full system scan. This will only run with Internet Explorer
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.
Not much luck yet. I did try both Panda and Trend Micro multiple times on IE, but neither one would load when I clicked. Same problem as Kaspersky. Panda on at least one occasion yielded an error message when I tried to get to their site via Google. I posted the error message below just in case it's useful. I have also posted the results of the virus scan on the Winstart.bat file. BTW, this is a computer that came with Vista Home Premium. Memory listed as 1982 MB. Another potential clue: When I click on the HP health check, I get a message "Can't find script engine "JScript.Encode" for script C:\Windows\Help\OEM\Scripts\launchHPHC.jse." Also, BTW, I did uninstall Winpatrol and Adaware and Spybot just to be sure that they were not involved. I still can't remove the three items that you identified on HJT. Lastly, I cannot get my Yahoo Music Player to start up, as I get an error message about being unable to create the media control player, followed by a fatal exception message. Thank you for looking at this. Any help you can offer is very much appreciated. Server Error in '/CMSPANDA' Application. ——————————————————————————– Field not found: ?.authSwitch. drbandage,

I am not looking at anything wrong virus wise on your HJT log or DSS. The amount of memory you have for Vista is correct and it should make your system run smoothly. What I do see are two Registry cleaner programs, Uniblue is legit, don't know what the other one is, BUT whats important is that if you ran reg cleaners and removed entires from the registry without knowing what they where you can really bork your system. I have been around computers since windows 3.1 and have never had any use for registry cleaners. The symptoms your describing sound like to me that it could be related. I think at this point the options you have is to post in a windows forum or contact the manufacturer of your system and they can help you restore it to factory defaults. Make sure you back up any pictures or documents to a CD or Thumb drive before you do that,

I wish I could offer more assistance but we just do malware removal in this forum but I will leave this thread open for you in case you need to post back. i am going to ask a few of the other helpers to look it over in case I missed something.

Drbandage,

Do you remember ever installing this ? It has come under suspicion as a lot of posters do not ever remember installing it and it installed about the same time they started having issues.
F:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2

Ken
Thank you for looking at this. I do remember Registry Booster when I first bought it about a year ago. I don't think I can link its installation to any symptoms. The other is from Glarysoft and it was recommended on a couple of sites. I will definitely take your advice about not repairing registry in the future. I wish it were a simple fix, but it appears not to be malware, so that rules out at least one thing. I will take it up on the other forums as you suggest, and hopefully get to the bottom of this. Thank you very much for your help. Much appreciated.
Your very welcome , if they get you up and running better than your are now and can run the virus scans that I posted, run them and post the logs. These threads are usually closed in about 20 days or so , if you need to post back and its closed, you can PM me to reopen it or start a new topic. Ken :)
