I am getting IE pop-ups every 30 seconds or so while I am using Mozilla Firefox (latest version available). Please note I am not getting ANY popups through Firefox. I never use IE and do not remember downloading anything specific that may have triggered the install of spyware/trojans on my laptop. I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed and it keeps going crazy with the notifications telling me that “explorer.exe” is attempting to perform a suspicious activity and is categorized as “detected riskware hidden data sending”. I select “deny” whenever this notification appears but it seems like that doesn’t do anything and the popup is shown on top of the Firefox browser. I have updated and ran Kaspersky Internet Security, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Microsoft Defender, and SuperAntiSpyware. Both Microsoft Defender and SuperAntiSpyware each found a different Trojan and it was deleted. This was done while the computer was in safe mode. After those were deleted, I rebooted under normal startup. Once I opened Firefox, I started getting the popups through IE again. Here is a log from Hijackthis. THANKS SO MUCH for your help….

Hi kiddo118,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder (usually Start->My Computer->C:->SDFix and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the SDFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Silver,

Thank you for your help. When I downloaded SDFix.exe from the link you provided, my Kaspersky Internet Security gave a warning saying that it is a virus (modification) and cannot be disinfected (only quarantined or deleted). The name of the virus is "Heur.Invader" and is located at c:\sdfix\catchme.exe. I went ahead and downloaded it anyway since I thought it could be one of those "false positive" viruses. After using the SDFix tool, it has now been placed in the quarantine area. Please let me know if this is actually not a virus and should be okay to use. Below are the logs for the SDFix (report.txt) and DSS logs (main.txt and extra.txt). Please let me know if there is anything else that needs to be done. After rebooting and everything, there has not been any popups from IE yet (knocks on wood).

Hi kiddo118,

That detection was a false positive, it looks like SDFix ran OK and we're finished with it for now so no need to restore that file.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
and remove it. This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 5) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

You have µTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove µTorrent via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3DDB1C1D-CD4D-402D-B77F-8BC4EDCE559B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qopqq.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [poolsv] "C:\WINDOWS\poolsv.exe"
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://download.game...aploader_v6.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: qopqq - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqoolk - C:\WINDOWS\

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
@echo off
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wii" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pinz1" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\IDE2" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ExTmp" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\axV" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
dir "C:\WINDOWS\system32\bharebio01" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called look.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"

  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Eset scan log and a new HijackThis log.

HI Silver thanks for the quick reply,

I removed the Java 2 Runtime and Viewpoint but will keep the µTorrent for now. I usually do not use that program often but when I do, I try to scan the file prior to opening it. Thanks for the advice.

I also ran Hijackthis and removed the lines you asked me to.

I copied and pasted the contents into notepad for the "runme.bat", ran it, and got the look.txt file.

However, when I got to the last part, the ESET Online Scanner, the website would not load in IE and it just says "page cannot be displayed". Is this just meaning that the website may be down? I also tried opening the link in FIrefox but no go. The page just stops trying to load and stays blank.

Here are the contents of the look.txt file and a new Hijackthis log, but no ESET log.txt

Hi kiddo118,

I don't know what went wrong with the Eset scanner, we'll use a different one.

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt file list below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt File List:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wii
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pinz1
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\IDE2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ExTmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\axV
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\bharebio01
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqpoq.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqpoq.bak1
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqpoq.bak2
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wendy Ng\Local Settings\Temp\dbhyyfgp.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wendy Ng\Local Settings\Temp\hycrkmqh.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wendy Ng\Local Settings\Temp\ndwbcydn.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\Wendy Ng\Local Settings\Temp\qaajytdb.exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report will appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report, the Dr Web scan log and a new HijackThis log.

It's running fine/normal and nothing out of the ordinary. Computer does not appear to be as slow as before when it was invaded by whatever I had. I forgot to ask, after running the Dr. Web utility, it found those viruses and it was copied to the scan log: 04943167.FIL;C:\$VAULT$.AVG;Adware.ClickSpring;; popcaploader.dll;C:\Deckard\System Scanner\backup\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files;Program.PopcapLoader;; Process.exe;C:\SDFix\apps;Tool.Prockill;; A0047739.reg;C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP461;Trojan.StartPage.1505;; If anything, the last line appears to say "Trojan" and I was wondering if that was a suspicious file also? Can you explain to me what had infected my computer? What should I look out for in the future? What steps can I take to avoid this nasty bugger again? Should I run these diagnostic utilities once a month to keep a clean hard drive? BTW, you mentioned in the beginning when you first replied to this thread that I may be infected by a backdoor trojan and that it can never be 100% sure that it's completely clean even though it may be removed. Is that still the case? I don't want to be paranoid when checking my bank accounts or going into my e-mails. Thanks Silver.

Hi kiddo118,

I'm glad things are running better. All the items in the Dr Web log are bad but at the moment they are all safely quarantined, and will be deleted by the final instructions in this post.

As I mentioned in my first post, the malware on your machine may have had keylogging and/or backdoor capabilities, so the advice regarding changing passwords etc is very important and I recommend you take it seriously. I'm confident that the malware has now been cleaned, but I cannot give you a 100% assurance, only a wipe and reformat can possibly do that.

It's crucial to keep Windows and the programs you run on it up to date with the latest patches and security fixes. Kaspersky is an excellent security package as long as it's kept up to date. After the final cleaning steps I will give you some further advice on steps you can take to prevent reinfection.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [AVG7_Run] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe /RUNONCE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Please now delete cureit.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\$VAULT$.AVG

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

If the above went well, I think your machine is now clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install specialist antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
