Hi
I have been having trouble with slow start up on my gateway laptop. The staff at the store (best buy) told me for $30 they would fix it. Shouldnt i be able to choose what I want to start up? I found info and opened up the start up tab but am unsure of what the files are and dont want to remove anything that will affect stability. (done that before!!) Any ideas?
Please don't pay them 30 $ for this, it's something you can easily do and that people are happy to help you with for free
To speed up your startup we will want to remove some of the programs that begins when your computer boots.
To do this the easiest way I recommend is to download CCleaner <– Click there
Open up the program: Go to Tools > Startup
[external image: Posted Image]
Where you see: Program names, copy the names one by one and google them, it will tell you if its needed or not.
If you are still unsure copy those items here and we can take a look at it.
While you are at it Clean out your Temporary files by using the "Cleaner" function in CCleaner.
Also look into defraging your computer. Two good ones I know of are IObit Dfrag and AusLogics or simply use the one on your computer under start > Accesories > System Tools (For XP at least)
Good luck,
Thank you for your reply, however the link for the cleaner brings me to some geek website that does not give me the option to download it. I tried a few diffrent versions and there is nothing to click on.? I will try to find the program on google and let you know.
Hi,
The link you were given to CCleaner in Suerte's reply was correct and is working OK…take another look at it ( you should be at Major Geeks site and you can download the application from the nearest site to you although the application is small and quick to download anyway.
If you don't want to do this you could use Msconfig instead…Start> Run>msconfig>startup
www.pcpitstop.com will carry out a good analysis on your machine (Run the tests) for free and tell you what can be unloaded from startup (blue items)
If you want further guidance on tis post back the tech express link and we can help you with interpreting the report

I have found another good defrag utility a long while ago. It's called JkDefrag and they have created a GUI version of it for Windows for easier access.
The application starts defragging your harddrives and there's a sheduler built-in as well.
It's a great utility.
If your computer is running slow, check the following :
- Scan your computer for virusses and spyware, just to make sure there isn't any malware on your system that can slow down your computer.
- Next, remove any applications you don't use or don't use often and remove them. I can recommend Absolute Uninstaller ( freeware download at http://www.glarysoft.com/au.html ).
- Aside CCleaner, there is also a program called Glary Utilities ( also freeware, but paid version also available ) from the makers of Absolute Uninstaller. See above for the link to the GlarySoft.com website.
- To optimize your use of your RAM memory, check out Free RAM Optimizer XP. Also a freeware download. This application tries to "free up" some of your RAM memory when you close applications. Some applications don't "release" the memory that they have taken up. Although this memory taken by most applications is easier to restart the application, it also consumes much memory and could cause problems with your computer. I have been using this Free RAM Optimizer XP utility for a while now and it works great.
