[Resolved] Extremely slow startup on Laptop

My Laptop is extremely slow at startup and when launching individual programs. I have gone to START>RUN>and entered msconfig, as suggested on your home page, but I have no idea what I was looking at to remove items. Is it possible to get some help? Thanks

No, the first topic was regarding the desk top computer. We also have 2 laptops. This is regarding one of those. We use it a lot when we are traveling and connect to a variety of WiFi sites (mostly secure) and I also use a Verizon USB card. The computer is progressively getting slower and slower so I'm not sure if it is because of the startup programs or if I picked up a virus somewhere. I am not very knowledgeable whenit comes to computers.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please bear with me – I had to reboot the computer as it got "hung up" and I could not get it to respond, so I had to reboot. It takes forever to startup and I can't do anything while that is happening. I am do ing the ATF Cleaner now – it is very slow (I am using the desk top to write this)

It depends how much is in there. Give it a few more minutes. If after a few minutes it's not doing anything, use Alt/CtRL/DEL keys and end the the task for ATF cleaner

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on. Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!



Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:

Google Desktop Search <–Unless you use it.


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

I know you wrote not to delete anything – however I could not get Spybot to respond to anything and when I clicked on the icon the only option was to "run" (as if to install) so-o-o I uninstalled Spybot and if advisable will reinstall after everything is done SORRY

I don't know if this will help — every time I shut down the computer I always get a message "Shell con Hidder Window" What is this? Also Sbybot always said "Not Responding" and the system ended the program
