[WTFwindows]

A few days ago, I clicked on one of my ISP's Updates. Without my knowledge, I think the update forced a new icon into my taskbar called EarthLink Accelerator, a program for Earthlink's dialup users (useless to me since I have EarthLink w/Cable). I tried looking for Accelerator in Add/Remove Programs and then did a system Search in all of my folders. 0 hits. My ISP's website provided no help on how to to remove it.

I don't think the icon's harmful, but I'm annoyed that it's cluttering my taskbar and would like to remove it. It just really reminds me of 4, 5 years ago when I had bad spyware problems and some Xupiter Toolbar hijacked my taskbar. Someone on a tech forum instructed me to get HijackThis and, with their help, I was finally able to delete the annoying icon. I'm hoping the same thing can happen again. Also, please tell me if my log looks OK.

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum sorry about the delay but our helpers are just swamped. Your HJT program is very outdated and may not be showing everything, drag it to the trash and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

• Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
• Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
• Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.





Open Hijackthis

• Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
• Click on Save List.
• The list will open in Notepad.
• Copy and Paste the List into this thread

Post the Uninstall log and a new HJT log by Trendmicro please

You should uninstall anything to do with ViewPoint , it installed without your knowledge or consent, uses system resources and is not needed and is about to cross the line into Adware.

These may be related to that issue

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

This will stop it from starting up, after you uninstall Viewpoint this entry may be gone

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

• Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
  Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  
• Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  
• Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  
• IE-Spyad
  IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  
• Firefox 2.0.0.13 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Hey! I uninstalled Viewpoint easily enough, but where you said

does following entries refer to the two entries you listed before or after you wrote that?

Before I use HijackThis to try to take care of the Accelerator problem, I have some news, though. Today I used a different system search term, and this time I was able to find an Accelerator folder. The reason I couldn't find it before is that the location says it's in Program Files/EarthLink TotalAccess, but when I view TotalAccess in the Program Files, for some reason there is no Accelerator subheading.

Anyway, when I tried to move the folder to the recycle bin, I got a pop-up message: "Cannot delete cse.pyd: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." I get the feeling that if I could just delete this folder, my problem might be solved. But how do I delete it?

Regarding the TaskPanl.exe info link, I'm not too knowledgeable about computers. It advises to "disable this program." Does that mean disable the TaskPanl.exe? How would I disable it? Also, would you recommend I get the Free Registry Scan in the Try a Registry Scan link?

Those two HJT entries may be gone after you uninstall those programs.

You can boot to safemode to remove that folder.
To Enter Safemode

• Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
• As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
  this will bring up a menu.
• Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
• Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Once in Safe Mode, I tried to delete the folder and was stuck at "Cannot delete prplsf.dll: Access is denied" this time. Maybe that means I shouldn't mess with the folder.. TaskPanl.exe is realated to Earthlink Accelerator.

Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc and click on Enter. The services are listed alphabetically. Look for Earthlink Accelerator. Double click on it to open it and change the start up type to disabled and lets see if this fixes it.

Since this is not a malware problem I am going to have to direct you to some windows support sites to help you with this issue as we are up to our ears with infected computers and in this forum its our first priority.
