HELLO and let me say before I begin thank you to anyone that can help..this is driving me to drink!!!!!!! A little background on myself I had worked in the IT field for almost 11years so not to stupid when it comes to computers, but I also know the worst kind of person in IT is the one that knows or thinks they know. So I empty my cup so that it may be filled. Here is the problem I am having on my wifes pc she has the following trojans on her system which opens multiple tabs in her ie7, changes her start page and also shuts down her system restore. Trojan Horse PSW.Small.4.B1 Trojan Horse Generic 9.AAOW I have installed on her pc these tools…spybot S&D……Hijack this……..Adaware2007…and AVG, each of these have the latest definitions and latest versions and still they can't seem to get rid of these….any help would be greatly appreciated. Mark P.S. I am in Australia so the time dif may make it hard for me to timely respond to your directions but they will get done as you direct…thank you
Hello geminii_98

Welcome to the WhattheTech Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to.

Try running HJT in Safemode, make sure you have the latest version by Trendmicro, I really can't offer any assistance until I see the log. If your running an older version, drag it to the trash.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode
ok here is the latest and greatest HJT log for my wifes pc. Booted pc into safemode and ran scan, but when tried to send lof using wifes (sharyn) log would not stay open for me to copy it and send. Had to send to my pc and paste it here.

Hello,

Lets do a few things. Did you set that hosts file that all the 01 entries are pointing to?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

This is important , do this and post a new Hijackthis log
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<– Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass ) and rename it to Scanner.exe

Post the Malwarebytes log and a new HJT log in Normal windows please.

Hello,

I suspect that you got infected from the gambling sites, some are ok and some are not.,

Lets try a few things.

Download HostsXpert v 4.2
  • Unzip HostXpert to your desktop
  • Open up the HostXpert program.
  • Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click Create Back Up
  • Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
  • Close the HostXpert program

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Malwarybytes removed a file from the Alcan worm, lets run this tool and see if any more of it is left.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to a folder of it’s own (c:\BFU).
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

Next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window you'll see a little icon as shown in next picture: [external image: Posted Image]
When you click that icon, a little window will open that says: 'Please enter the full URL to the sript you want to execute'
In the field, copy and paste next URL:

http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

Click Ok.
Then click execute in Brute Force Uninstaller.

Extra note:
If nothing happens after pressing the Execute button, this means that the script didn't download. In that case, download the script ( alcanshorty.bfu ) manually from above url ( rightclick on it and choose 'save as' and save it in your BFU-folder). Then start BFU.exe again and click the browse button next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window
Browse to the script you downloaded and Click Ok and Execute in Brute Force Uninstaller.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

I had you run HJT in Safemode because I knew you where having problems but I need to see the log in Normal windows as in safemode it wont show everything
hi Ken I have tried what u suggested and HostXpert does the same as HJT it comes up and then just dissappears…….anything else we can try I could however run the BFU and the ATF…but when I try the HostsXpert or HJT they just comeup and disappear. Frustration sets in…but I am not willing to let this get the best of me or you. I await your reply.
Hello Mark,

You have a couple of questionable programs running, see if you can remove them from the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

This one is an alert from Golden Casino

Hi,

You can remove this with HJT if you don't want it, its related to Messenger.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://startzone.info

The rest of your log looks fine  How is your system running now??
hi Ken Just got home from work and wanted to check and see if there was a message from you. Her system seems to be ok :yeah: . I Just asked her if she is still getting that messengersite.net on her pc and she said she didn't know… I took it upon myself to remove that startzone entry with HJT when I sent u that log…forgot to put that in my reply before. I also changed her start home page in internet options and the other day 03/01/2008 when I rebooted her system and opened internet explorer it only openned to yahoo7.com.au. Her system seems to be running ok :woot: . I thank you so much for your assistance. Anything else u need for me to do?
Thats great
