Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Make sure that the bubble under "Drivers" is set to "Non Microsoft"
  • Make sure that "Rootkit Search" is set to "yes"
  • Under "Additional Scans", scroll down and put a checkmark under "File - PurityScan"
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

When I go to run OTscanIt, I get an error message saying "Error loading process libraries" then "The specified module could not be found"
Before we continue….

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have several Very Dangerous infections on this machine.
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present…
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. If you do any financial work or personal business on this machine.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have a Remote Access Trojan, (RAT) the worst kind.
  • If you simply use this machine for music and browsing the internet I wouldn't worry to much.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords – for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.

Thanks,

Danny
Thanks for the warnings. Luckily I've kept the infected computer disconnected from internet/networks since the infections began. It is primarily used just for music/browsing/IMs, etc, so I wouldn't have to worry about losing data/reinstalling many programs, so I would feel better if everything was just wiped clean and started fresh.
I think that would be a better course of action as well. You had alot of hidden files, and I wouldn't trust it even if it appeared clean.

If you would like a list of applications that were installed on your computer:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Also, if you need any help with formatting, and reinstalling, feel free to ask.

Danny
I've just finished formatting and reinstalling Windows on the infected computer, and I just wanted to get one last check to see if everything is cleaned up:

Everything looks fine

Here is a prevention speech that I recommend:

Hi,

Your computer is now clean!

Let's clean your restore points and set a new one (there might not be one yet either):

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

After System Restore is turned back on, create a Restore Point:

Go to: 'Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools', and select System Restore.
In the System Restore Wizard, select: 'Create a restore point'.
Click: Next
Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
Click: Create

**To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

This article includes important ways of how to keep safe, and has links to programs that you should download to keep spyware free!

Some programs that I recommend:

  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
