I am in need of some help. I ran my a-squared anti malware the other day and it picked up a worm named Email-Worm.Win32.Warezov.om I have attached the reports saved by a-squared. The worm was first detected in 3 locations of microsoft office as seen in one of the attachments, it was then found on a re-scan in system volume information\_restore, I did not save the report for this scan, and finally after a third scan it showed up again in RECYCLER for which I have attached the report. The computer seems to be running fine and there are no obvious problems but I am not sure if the worm has been removed successfully and I cannot find any info on the internet as to what it does or how to remove it manually. If someone could give me some advice that would be great. Many Thanks Bob
Hello bob the dog and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Download HijackThis from Here .
  • Choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Click the Install button.
  • Accept the license agreement .
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file. A Notepad file will open.
  • Select all the text by hitting the [Ctrl+A] keys, then copy your selection to the clipboard by pressing the [Ctrl+C] keys.
  • Paste the log into this thread by hitting the [Ctrl+V] keys.
  • when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER
Hi Trevuren, I have had to use my laptop to send you this reply as everytime I try to type anything on the main PC, the one infected by the worm, whether it be on an e-mail, a word doc or even trying to log into this forum, the computer freezes and I am unable to do anything other than pull the plug out. I am guessing that this is the worm at work. I did what you said and downloaded and ran hijack this and I have the report but no way of sending it. Any ideas? Thanks Bob
Are you able to copy it to some removable media (Just the log) and transfer it to an operational machine and post it from there. If that is not possible in normal Windows Mode, please try whilst in Safe mode to copy the log. There is not much I dare do flying blind. Good Luck, Trevuren
Hi Trevuren

Here is the hijack this log, managed to put it on a flash drive and transfer to my laptop. Thanks for the advice!

Let's start with the easy stuff. I want you to print out the following so you do not miss anything when working on the other machine.

A. First we will disable some of the Security programs so that they do not interfere with our fix:

KASPERSKY ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right click it-> select Pause Protection.
  • click on -> By User Request
  • a popup will claim that protection is now disabled and a sign like this: [external image: Posted Image] will now be shown.
You succesfully disabled the Kaspersky Antivirus Guard.

AD-AWARE AD-WATCH
  • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
  • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
  • Uncheck both of those boxes.
  • (When done, you can re-enable it using the same steps but this time check both boxes.)

B. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok

  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi…fo/bt_side.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [setupuser] regedit.exe /s C:\WINDOWS\setupuser.log
    O4 - Global Startup: BT Yahoo! Help.lnk.disabled
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.

  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):

    C:\WINDOWS\setupuser.log<–File

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Try starting your machine and tell me how it goes.
I have rebooted but safe mode is not an option, at least there is nothing saying safe mode shown on the advanced option screen. What is showing is, Floppy 1.44 MB 3 IDE-0 Maxtor 4D040H2 CD/DVD BBS-0(Network) Realtek Boot Agent
I managed to get into safe mode and did what you said, here is the new log. I am still not able to use the keyboard, everytime I press any key it locks the machine up.
